outboard help

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

outboard help

Post by ikissfish »

I cant seem to post on the outboard section so I am posting here

I have an old outboard 50hp Suzuki (1982) that I purchased. It has been sitting out of the water for many years. It does still run as I had it running for a about 20 secs in the garage. (didn't want to overheat so I shut it down)

I want to replace the impeller. I followed the instructions in the manual, removed all the bolts etc for the casing but the casing wont come apart. Seems that the aluminum is seized together?

Has anybody experienced this? any solutions?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe a heavy rubber mallet or a block of wood and hammer. Or also a single edged razor blade and tap it in between the two surfaces and work your way around. It will probably only drop down a couple of inches and then you'll have to disconnect the shaft. Good luck with it.

I looked at the schematics for your motor. One lower unit has 6 bolts and the other model appears to have 9 bolts. Looks like there's a large washer and bolt on the underside of the lower unit. It's hard to tell but the 9 bolt unit looks like one bolt might be hidden under the large washer. If your sure you have all the bolts out, tap the lower unit with a rubber or resin dead blow mallet. I wouldn't use a metal hammer as you might break the case. There should also be a shift rod that runs from the motor to the lower unit. I can see it in the schematic but I'm not sure how it's fastened. Usually the shift rod has to be disconnected. I would be real careful if your not sure how to do it. If you pull the shift rod out of the lower unit and it's not suppose to come out, you'll have to pay someone to put it back together. There's some how to video's on You Tube I'd look at if I were you.
Good Luck.

Thanks for the replies, The shift rod is disconnected from right under the carbs  gawd awefull place!

Ive looked for all the bolts and cant find any more than what I have, I have all the manual for this thing so I am sure that I have all the bolts out, I have been hitting it with a rubber hammer and nothing is budging. ... Soaking it deisel is a good idea except that I will need to find a large enough barrel and the cost of the about 30lt of diesel to get it up to the seam  .

I think that I will try seafoam on the seam for now, let it soak for a while, spray some more on, let it soak,

I still think the razor blade might work just to start a crack. If you can get a strip of aluminum and grind down the edge to make a knife edge then you can use it as a wedge and tap it in around the sides to force the two sides apart.
A heat gun to expand the two parts and then the mallet might help as well.
