What's best for fishing? New moon or full moon?

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

That's what I've always said. Would I ever stay home because it was a bad moon? That's funny. NO.

Exactly, I wish whenever I can get out regardless of moon phase or what not.

All I know is I regularly have good days on what is supposed to be "bad" and bad days on what is supposed to be "good". I though this past Friday and Saturday were supposed to be good with the full moon. For me Saturday was my worst outing of the season...

For quite a number of years, I have paid some attention to the "solunar tables" published here and there, including in Ontario Out of Doors magazine. I have seen some correlation between the predicted best times to be out and what actually happened for me. But I agree with the folks that said, fish when you can regardless of moon phase. BUT (large BUT) if your time to fish is very limited and you are trying to pick a day or two, my own choice would be to go with the new moon.

It has no effect on the fish at all.

It is all the fisherman. They are lunatics. Cant fish properly during certain lunar phases!

If you are planning a week long fishing trip, go with new moon, if you plan to fish during the day.
Full moon is good if you want to fish during the night because that will be when the fish are eating however I have noticed that full moon also usually brings with it a cold front, especially in June.

Barometric pressure is far more important than moon phases. They're fish not deer

While keeping records for the first 7 or 8 years of fishing up north, the full moon was the most productive for walleye and pike. New moon was a close second.

Only times I pay attention to moon phases now are when thinking about trips to book (especially camping) as it's nice to have the full moon light at nights. Not a must though. And, if going muskie fishing I'll check moon rise and set now. (something I started this past fall) All my local muskie this year were caught within the hour of either, so it pays to know so that you're not snacking, sleeping, or experimenting during a better chanced time.

Is there something to moon phases, rise and set... yep!

I think that it depends on the fish your after. Walleye and musky seem to be heavily influenced by the moon cycles, probably because there vision is good and its in there best interest to feed when the moon is out and bright and they have the sight advantage. However, this factor should be very low on your fishing totem pole cuz if the weather, barometer and locations aren't right then it won't matter. I have also noticed that when the moon is full and very bright, the fish seem to move, usually going shallower in the water column and tighter to the structure.
