Two Problems with New HumminBird Units

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Two Problems with New HumminBird Units

Post by iankrzyzanowski »

Last year I upgraded my electronics and had two problems.
One was interference with the bow unit. Every time I hit
the power on the pedal my screen went crazy. I have read
up on that over the winter and will be trying the ferrite
rings and also running a ground wire from the skeg of my
trolling motor to a negative post on one of my batts.

Second problem, which is more annoying than the first is
that my console/main unit, a 958 DI looses the screen
while I moving under power. I never had a problem with my
lowrance units even while running full throttle. Is there
any fixes for this? I have heard its the positioning of
the transducer, but Ive played with it a bunch and have
never been able to solve the problem..

Both are wired directly to a battery and all updates have been done.

Any ideas?

Ian,

What battery is the console unit attached to - trolling or starting? Have you tried switching it from one to the other?
Are the batteries new or ready to be replaced ->voltage issue?

What trolling motor -> minnkota or motorguide? Motorguides and HB's seem to have more issues with interference than others
Wiring -> what guage wiring are you using for the power? Heavier is better

Also go to http://www.bbcboards.net/humminbird-sonar-gps/ HB sonar forum.

front unit must be hooked up to the starting battery only. dash unit ,try turning/pointing the transducer towards the front a bit at a time . both my units did the same thing// now work great. hope this helps.

CN & GetHooked, Both units are independently wired to the main cranking battery with Ancor Marine grade 2 Cond 14 AWG (UL) wire.

Brand new AGM battery so voltage is not an issue. Trolling motor is a 101 maxuum, and it is attached to the head of the trolling motor via a clamp not the universal transducer.

Gethooked, do you mean just tilting the transducer in its brackets towards the bow , as in pointing the transducer upwards/skywards?

Thanks for the suggestions lads!

I've never had an issue with interference, but I know it is fairly common for the Humminbirds to lose power when running under speed. It is usually due to a poor connection from the harness clip into the back of the unit (they often do not fit snug - so when you bump a wave it loses contact just long enough to shut your unit off). The good news is that the fix is pretty simple... just take some needle nose pliers and slightly bend each of the pins on your connection. They will fit more snug and you wont have this issue again. I suffered through this for an entire season a few years back, made this small fix and never had a problem since.

You are right Bobby, that has happened quite a bit with my buddies boat and he also has the bird units.

Mine loosing the bottom on the graph while on plane and gets scrambled readings.

Where is the transducer mounted? Jackplate? Direct to the hull?

What kind of boat is it attached to.

I'm not all that familiar with the DI xducer but with the big SI xducer to get on plane readings one needs to install a thru-hull 2D transducer and use the Y cable to get everything hooked up properly.
If you're gonna be stupid, you'd better be tough.
