Why Can't You Troll For Bass?
I mean, I know it would be boring in my eyes, but so many people prefer to troll for trout, musky, pike and walleye.. and it is a completely acceptable way to catch those types of fish, but the minute you troll for Bass, people look down their noses at you.
Is it not a rule in most tournaments that it is forbidden to troll for bass?
WHY?!
Craig

You could, some of the guys at the cottage troll for trout and catch Bass...
I usually catch-em pretty shallow so trolling would be hard..

Used to troll for them years ago... I am talking back in the early 80's with great success.. Still pick up the odd monster smallie on the downriggers by accident.

Re: Why Can't You Troll For Bass?
I used to troll for bass alot, and still do at times. It is effective, especially now with good electric motors and electronics. I usually treat it more as a backtroll and positioning than a forward troll line like I would do for lakers or musky.
As for the tounaments... when I asked the question to the Renegade Bass folks, I received the following answer "Ultimately the trolling rule is there because we do not want to have the boat under power of the main engine while anglers are fishing." So, from that, if you had a '15 kicker' or electric trolling I guess it would be fine or at least in some grey area.

Re: Why Can't You Troll For Bass?
I love to troll for bass at the cottage using a paddle-boat. I sit on the side against a solid weed-bed that runs for miles along the shore-line. This lets me tuck-in much tighter than I can with my boat, and the smallies don't seem to mind the "thup thup thup" of the paddle boat as much as the drone of an engine or whine of an electric. Running my lure a foot or two out from the weed bed is pretty much guaranteed to bring good action.
The biggest bass I have caught on the lake is with the bigger boat, trolling 40-60 feet down for trout.

People troll for bass all the time. They just refer to it as "drifting".
If you're gonna be stupid, you'd better be tough.

Trolling has been set aside for the '' Walleye '' guys....cigarette in one hand and a pint of beer in the other, with no intention whatsoever of catching a walleye.
There will be an influx of Great Grey Owls in the winter of 2017

I've leadcored for shallow trout and caught many bass. My PB largemouth came from about 20ft of water. Who would have thunk it?
