Fish and Ships

Post by Out4trout »

Fishing outings were quite sporadic this summer due to a variety of reasons. With hunting seasons now opening, it was decided that there would be one last fishing outing with my son before hunting took over our available time. Smallmouth were unquestionably the quarry, and from all reports the St Lawrence river was the place to be. Next was the planning. Although only 1/2 hour from home, we tend toward the back lakes and as such the St Lawrence remained new territory for us.

The quandary was... do we spend our last opportunity of the season scouting and learning new water? No, it made way more sense to make this one count, as productive as possible... a quick message was sent to just the fella that could turn those odds in our favor... RJ.

We scheduled the next opening and with the date set, it all came together finally Saturday. Weather couldn't have been better, partial overcast, nearly no wind and 16C. RJ slipped the big Lund off the bunks and in about 2 minutes we were flying up the Larry on unbelievably calm water. This was it...

On arrival at the first destination, the front bird showed some promising marks. A quick rundown on the gameplan and in minutes the first football slipped into the net. It was a goodun and I knew from the smile on my sons face that we had absolutely made the right decision.

Quite a few ships chugged past, trying to fill their holds before the coming winter... providing some nice close up views.

The bronze below were also filling their holds before winter. These things were FAT!! A reference was made to Nicki Minaj, about to bust open... but after a good laugh we decided that comparison was insulting to these fantastic fish.

The fall feedbag is definitely on!! As fattie after fattie hooked up, dodging and pounding... we couldn't have asked for a more productive time. The bigger fish went live well for their pending Hollywood moment... while the smaller ones slipped back quickly. In maybe 12 drifts we had 4 fish / 15lbs in the well, with another 8 or so already released boatside. Right time, right place, right weather, right guy, right on!! :D

We slipped a few more over the side on a few different spots, back to the catch zone - quick pics of the success and the fat girls went back to their familiar home, and we headed back to the launch. Full pin in the Lund at 53mph, with the big Merc growling behind was just icing on the cake.

Smiles all around, the young lad took big fish award which is how it ought to be. It really doesn't get much better than this. Days and memories like this are what it's all about. We caught more quality bronze in this one short trip than we could have imagined. RJ sure knows his shtuff, a true professional and all credit is due for making this an awesome outing. Luck just isn't in the equation.

If you want to maximize your time on the water, give RJ a call at RJ'nBirdees Outdoor Adventures... we are glad we did. 8-)
Thanks Rob, top drawer all the way. Til next time.

Wow Len. Thanks.

We've had a crazy busy Fall with Smallie bookings as well as Muskies. The fish have been the stars of the show.

It was a pleasure to have you and Tristan aboard the Lund, glad you enjoyed the day.
