First muskie

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

First muskie

Post by Sourdough »

Gentlemen, Ladies,

My first muskie. Not a monster (maybe 32 to 36 inches), but awesome nonetheless. Got it from shore on the Ottawa river on a 3 inch perch pattern jerkbait..

I was out with my dog, walking along the shore, few casts here, a few there. I started out with a swimbait. Seems everything likes a swimbait, but after I lost it to a snag, I changed up to a jerkbait. Then we stumbled upon a spot where a side channel meets a larger channel. It looks like ideal ambush territory, so I threw out the jerbait. About the fifth cast something took the lure and pulled hard. But, after a flash of white, it got off. I figured whatever it was could still be around, or have a friend, so I kept at it. My dog got bored and tried to eat something nasty ( figures). I decided to stick it out a little longer and switched spots a little to move out onto a point with fewer dog snacks. And that's when the muskie took my lure. It put up a good fight, and rolled serveral times. I don't know if this is common for them, but it sure looped the line around the fish. Got it unravelled and released ( never out of the water), hence the odd picture. I was excited like a kid, and had to let out a little whoop. At that point, i am sure, the dog thought was crazy. Anyway, it was one of those days that keeps you going back.

Cheers,
Sourdough

Very nice.

The aligator death roll is not uncommon at all, even worse when they do it in the net.

Congrats on your first, may there be many more.

Nice fish!
I've really been thinking about starting to target musky lately. We live in the perfect region and I am not taking advantage of the awesome opportunities to catch a fish of a lifetime.
