When does pike fishing pick up
Hey all, new to catching pike.. Was wondering when fishing for them becomes possible with the warming water. Thanks!
Re: When does pike fishing pick up
Fishing for pike becomes possible when the season opens. The 1st Saturday in may for zone 20 and the 2nd Saturday in may for zone 18 in Ontario. Not sure about the Quebec regulations

Year round buddy, they will bite good on the st. Lawrence this wknd., find a shallow bay, with lotsa' sun shine, and remnants of a big weedline, any big boulders jutting out of shallow water will warm the water quickly, and they will hang around warm pockets of water, ambushing baitfish. Toss large swimbaits, slow rolling spinnerbaits, heck , even a spoon will work.

Whatever you do don't use a husky jerk
twitch-twitch pause. They always hit on the pause. Let the fish tell you how long to let it sit

Update! Couldn't resist throwing out a spoon this morning by hurdman bridge. Was casting along the bank for 40 min without a nibble when I saw a turtle swim by so that motivated me to keep going and ten minutes later a nice 2 footer slammed The spoon. Was taking a selfie when it flalied out of my hand into the water but I got a pic of it by the water. Will post after work. What a thrill!! Was lucky to reel it in was using braid without a leader and man this thing had gnarly teeth

The fishing regulations are online as well as found in some outdoor retailers.
It is always best to read them yourself.
I wouldn't normally mention this... but since it appears as though you haven't read the fishing regulations, there is a section in there about getting a fishing license, if you haven't done so already.
Once you do all that, fish away... pike will be active shallow as the water warms up... but once we hit summer temps, anything larger than 24 inches will most likely be in deeper cooler water or buried below weeds.

It's tough to see from the photo, but if I'm looking at a needle-like nose on the left, you caught yourself a Gar (as opposed to a Northern): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gar

I think the "needle-like nose" you're seeing on the left is actually the tail end with the fin still under the water. I could be wrong, though.lapointeric wrote:actualcityfishing wrote: Not sure what else it could have been? seemed pretty torpedo shaped to me

Could be, but it doesn't have a traditional horizontal spot pattern like a pike either. Could be one of those colourless grey ones though.xped wrote:I think the "needle-like nose" you're seeing on the left is actually the tail end with the fin still under the water.
