After the season or before the season? That is the question...
I have seen lots of people maintain there reels before the start of the season. But in my opinion, I would think that it's better to do it when your season ends so that why they are on the shelves for some months, at least they are ''swimming'' in oil instead of having all that crap on.
Why do you do it before your season and not at the end?

There is no rhyme or reason. I just do it when I get around to it.
I used to send them out but after you get to a certain amount of reels, its starts hurting! Now, I just do them myself.

I always clean my reels at the end of the season for a number of reasons ...
I don't think that they should sit with all that gunk solidifying for the winter.
I get mine cleaned by the manufacturer/rep so getting them done once the season is over, I avoid any rush during the spring. Also, if it happens that reel has an issue I know any delays aren't going to affect the start of the season. I'm sure that Ed has a rush on reel cleaning and spooling two weeks before the season opens!
Also, dealing with rod/reel issues in the fall, I can more easily plan out replacement or additional rods/reels as usually this is more expensive than lures etc.
Peace of mind .. If I have cleaned my reels and rods and sorted through tackle boxes in the fall/winter, I know that come spring there is no clean-up to do and all the work is in preparing/organizing for the upcoming season.
