Changing line on downrigger

I have a 1060 Depthking manual downrigger which I bought used last year.
I am going to change the line and am reading that braid line may be better than steel with less chance of crimping and breaking.
Does anyone have any experience with the braid line and does it cause damage to the downrigger?
