American Eel!!
Re: American Eel!!
I remember I caught one 21 years ago while electro-fishing an area of the South Nation. I think it was almost 4 feet long, and was hunkered down in the bottom of a deep crack in the bedrock. He wasn't very happy with me for shocking him, and when it broke the water the girl I was working with freaked out to the point where I had to take the net from her and land him myself. They're pretty amazing!

MNR update: Been trying to report my Eel since I caught it. Despite following the instructions in the glossy in the 2016 regs asking for reports I have been bounced around on the phone twice now only to be able to leave my contact info on two different voice mailboxes. No callback yet.
I remembered Yannick's post and I have found the ministry phone number of the researcher. Monday I will call him directly.
They are not making it easy and I am on a mission now!

Re: American Eel!!
Good day!
I have a cottage on the Ottawa, been fishing it for over 30 years! We use to get an eel every evening. Such a distinct fight, the way the swim backwards, spin...it's unlike any fish...almost..electric... at first it feels like a channy thrashing its head back and forth but as you pull them up, something feels different.
Anyway, I picked one up 2 weekends ago, I was sooooo happy, it had been over 15 years since I've seen one. I picked it up and got my hands nice and slimy, that stuff is great for your skin.
So yes, I reported my catch, got an email back from the ministry thanking me. My uncle also picked on up just 2 days ago. These things are, HOPEFULLY, making a comeback. Amazing creatures.

Re: American Eel!!
Awesome! Glad you got the picture... I wish I had. It is one species on the do not catch list that the MNR likes to have a photo of.
Finally got mine reported... Was yours tagged?

Re: American Eel!!
Eel are cool. Still see them occasionally on the St Lawrence.
We used to target them at night as a kid, back in the 70s. Smoked eel is awesome.
