Canal Walleye..

Been a while since we posted but I wanted to let our shore bound fishing friends know that there is more volume of water currently in the Canal & Dows lake.
This has really turned out to be the year we find WALLEYE in & around the Canal, first for me & now Junior as he gets a PB. plus size fish!
He is seriously working on his bait caster & distance, timing & water patterns.Spinners & crank baits have produced fish, but he is taking a liking to my collection of square bill crankbaits.

Below is just a few from the last 4 days.

And Junior beats this with a PB. walleye, 5+ lbs..!

Dusk is best , with crank baits like white,(Big O) & a citrus shad square bill ( Xcalibur Xcs200), or lime / charts square bill ( River 2Sea ), but the bite was less aggressive last night , missed 2 fish...
BTW. It was nice to meet fellow fishhawker JP Robson, who reported a soft bite too, but he did manage to get a LMB .

Thigh lines, and take a kid fishing, you never know what you will get !

Who would have thought that there would be walleye in the canal? Where would these fish overwinter? Are they a resident population, or just coming through the locks with the boat traffic?

Unless someone else knows better than I, your questions are up for debate.

I have been told there is about a hole near Pig Island that is deep enough for fish to over winter. Grant Hopkins, an Ontario Out of Doors magazine contributor, told me of this Pig Island spot. I don't know if he has ever proven the theory.

Perhaps some others out there have some evidence.

About 20 years ago (good lord time flies) in spring before the locks were open, there were about 9 carp trapped in the lock at Carleton U. Swimming in endless circles. So I suppose they had been there all winter and survived.

Coincidentally, I'm going to try my hand at carp fishing this weekend near Dow's Lake. Hair rigs and corn...

Also this is anot interesting read. Although it doesn't give a lot of specifics it shows that some fish must winter in the canal.

Yeah I have caught a couple walleye in the Canal as well this year. Seems to be a good year for it too.

I caught one on a chartreuse chatterbait and the other on a white 8-10 foot jerkbait

Congrats on the fine catch! I will let Junior know you had similar success on the chartreuse colour selection.
Q: What kind of chatter bait was used? Z-Man or booyah ?
We recently got some Rapala raps in olive green & white /Chartruse belly & will try out after the storms pass by..
