Crappie/ trout lures

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Crappie/ trout lures

Post by levitch »

hello all,

I am still fairly new to fishing and have been fishing mostly smallmouth bass and pike.
I would like to expand my skills to be able to target trout and crappie as well

Any tips on lures, techniques, strategy, location to target etc. would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance guys!

For Crappie just travel the Rideau after ice out. From Long Island to Burrits Rapids and down past Smiths Falls every lock, bridge and creek will have guys trying for Crappie. The locks warm up first and the further south you go the earlier the Crappie start as the water warms faster. Small tube jigs and twister tails with light weight heads around 1/16oz will be all you need. Light line 4lb and under can absolutely make all the difference between getting hits and not, even if your just attach a light leader to the end. Also get yourself a quality slip float set up with brass bushings in the float. Sometimes they want the lure swimming, other times just hanging under a float. Always fish higher in the water column, Crappie look up so you always want your bait above them. Real early season sometimes there's no action until just before dark.
