Well believe it or not......The pic that Hawg posted I have actually got 2 smaller than that
1st was jigin for eyes in the spring about 7yrs ago when I got what I thought was the smallest northern, but nope
It was only 8" long
The same year later on towards Sept on a different body of water I was twitching a shad rap and from behind a rock came a muskie that was only a teeny 10" long
Both fish hit with total aggresion and could imagine the power they would posses today
And my biggest being 51 3/4" Also while jigging for eyes.
Many moons ago and no pics layin around of em, but I think back over it and would love to have the shots now

Small Muskie

I picked him up while trolling for Pickerel in the north-west corner of Lake Scugog a few miles north of Port Perry. I caught him in the middle of a really hot day over a featureless, flat organic matter laden bottom.
Go figure!

Great question Markus. They have to be little before they get big, but nobody talks about the little ones. My smallest was a bout 19 ". I went to set the hook , thinking it was a big one, and pulled him/her out of the water, over my head and back into the water on the other side of the boat. No picture - sorry, too small - but lots of laughs!

I agree with MM. Although I have no proof, but they grow really fast and I would imagine that the 30-36" are only 2-3 years old. I'm sure there is solid evidence out there as to exactly how fast they grow. Another factor could be the low survival rate after the spawn. Pike spawn first and are big enough to feed on the muskie fry when they hatch. So with so few little ones surviving, and the fact that they don't stay small for long, the chances of finding one would be lower. I might be reaching but makes some sense.
