Ayling Lake

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Aylen Lake had a lodge at the Landing. I don't know if it still operates.
There's always Spectacle Lake Lodge just down the highway. It is not very far away from Aylen and is a little more upscale than the cabins at Aylen if I remeber correctly.

Here's a picture of a typical Aylen Laker taken with medium weight trolling gear.

Aylen Lake is pretty heavily fished by the locals and cottage owners. The good structures have been figured out quite awhile ago and are put under alot of pressure on weekends. I have two uncles with property on this lake and have had the opportunity to fish it since the 60's. I have seen the fish sizes shrink over the years.
There are a couple of groups who use GPS and sonar systems to track the same route over the interesting structures on evey pass.

When I was young the average size of a laker was around 10 pounds and now they are right in the slot limit that requires you to release them.

If memory serves me right the record laker for this lake is still 28pounds.

If you go please post your experience. I always like hearing stories about Aylen Lake.

Good Luck...

my grandmother lives year round on that lake.

have fished it probably more than any other in my life.

Never caught a lake trout....never even tried.

You fish for smallies? if so, email me at

cheesecake@mountaincable.net

The three biggest smallies i've ever seen in my life, came from that lake. Course none of them were mine, and two out of the three were kept, but at least one is swimming around...

You see, no one fishes for bass in that lake....or at least that was my experience fishing it the 3 or 4 dozen times i've fished it. There are also whitefish in the lake, huge schools of them. I've seen them swimming on the bottom, in about 20 feet of water (yep, clear water)....we couldn't get them to hit anything...just bump minnows, but wouldnt take them.

i'm talking schools of 25+ fish in them...mostly cruising the mouths of the bays past the island in the main arm...

anyways, if your fishing lakers, sorry i can't be of service, but if your looking for smallies, and are gonna release a lunker if you get one, email me...

Hello Steve,
If you are looking for small mouth bass on Aylen Lake try fishing the rocks in front of the "Bluff" in Burnt Depot Bay using a small frog or minnow.
If you want trout go to Red Pine Lake or Finger Lake on top of the Bluff. Use a small leech/blood sucker and light tackle.
When I was a teenager we would catch Speckled Trout and monster Yellow Perch in Jack's Lake.
Finger Lake gave the odd Speckle but it was work to get there.
The biggest Speckle I have ever seen came from Jack's Lake in the 1970's.
Gun Lake used to have monster bass. Before they took the tracks up you had to portage from the road.
Good luck...

its too bad, gun lake is pretty much dead, as are most of the smaller lakes in the area...they couldn't withstand the pressure....
