Boating license

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Boating license

Post by Jale »

Just wondering who does and who doesn't have their operators card yet???

Personally, I don't, and was wondering if any one would be interested in getting a group together and doing the course at once??

Will instructors travel somewhere and do a course if there is enough wanting it?

Just a thought

I got mine, didnt take a course, just the online test. I have sailing experience and sailing qualifications so the test was not too tough.

Just a tip guys,
If you going to attend any of the Fishing/boating or sportsman shows, they hold the exams right there.most offer a free try and you only PAY IF YOU PASS.thats a good deal IMO.it only takes less then 30 minutes and for some reason(rare)if you fail, you have a fair idea about the exam questions and its free.
Govt's money grab or not,Its not going away so get it while its easy and I have heard they are making it more difficult in the near future.and you might have to pay more.

Yeah it's a really easy government scam *OOPS* I mean test to pass. I got mine at a festival in town, and like fisher said it was an "only pay if you pass" type deals. I only got 3 wrong so I passed the first try.

I suggest you download the study guide from the internet and take the test on-line or at one of the fishing shows. I am actually teaching the boating safety course material to my grade 12 Natural Resource Studies class I teach and then the students will be completing the test on-line.

Wow I wish they had courses like that at my school. Closest thing we had was plain old biology. :(

jale666 I know 10 and 12 yr olds that have passed this test! You are right in your thinking though take a course, power sqadron basic boating is a great course, followed by their seamanship course and then navigation courses. The boat operators license is really a joke in that for the 35 bucks or what ever it is you pay it doesn't teach a thing to a guy with the seadoo or the 50' cruiser. Anchoring, docking, rules of the road, read a chart, use a VHF radio and responsding in emergencies are just a few of the things you should learn and will in a good boating course. Depending on where you boat you may not have need of much of this, but god forgive the day comes when you wish you did! I know I harp on this but a little education may save a life.

if ever you need more information on those courses, let me know, I worked for Fisheries and Oceans back in the days when they implemented this regulation, and well, a good friend of mine still works for them, so I can get you pretty much any info you need!

Buck

P.S. It is a very simple exam to pass, so if you do take a course, it will be a breather for you.

I did the same as Fisher. If you go to the Carp Sportsman's Show you can take the test there. It's free to try and if you pass you pay what I remember is around $35 I think. If you fail you pay nothing. Just pick up a safe boating guide at the show and study it for half an hour and you shouldn't have a problem. It's mostly common sense anyhow :D
Good Luck!

I did mine online last summer....as well as about 15 of my buddies' and buddies' dads tests...so by the 5th one or so it was a race how fast we could get the 100%!!! Credit card it and they give you a card on the screen to print right then and there until you get your plastic in the mail.

Just another add-on for our expensive habit! But what can ya do if it keeps you sane.

Good luck (you won't need it, just a pulse)

I did mine 2 years ago and figured to get it over with so it would be one less thing to worry about... also you never know they may change something.. make it harder (hopefully they do :?).. put the price up.. who knows. Right now you only need one for smaller powered craft.. I beleive the next date is 2008 when the bulk of us will be effected.

I am a proctor and I issue the PCOC and I think I have only seen 5 people fail out of a couple hundreds. Like FishforFun says, kids pass the test.

I offered to go to Quinte at the fall get together to have guys challenge the test but I guess there was no interrest.
