Monster Shark Tournament

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

You sure could fff. Most of the time it's not strength, but more endurance. You'll be good and tired when you're done.

Shark!

:) That show was excellent. It's probably the best reality TV show on right now.

Those reels are also used for Tuna fishing and have over 1 mile of mono on them! The rod and reel will set you back $800 - $1000 USD.

FFF, you could probably handle a big shark, but the lads back at the shop would have their way with you until you recovered. You'd be on that fish for about 4 hours.

I didn't know they had shark derbies in Yarmouth... When I visited my Aunt there all I saw were scallop boats and a 365 Christmas store.

Marcus, I am curious too. Yarmouth is my home town, and I have never heard of a shark tournament from there. I suspect it is a Dept of Fisheries and Oceans sanctioned event, and they need the sharks for their research. It certainly isn't mentioned on the Yarmouth tourism site. Any links for more info?

Yarmouth, Nova Scotia is in my father's hometown . This is the shark that was caught 2 weekends (~Aug28/04) ago during the shark/tuna tournament in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia ..it was caught by Jamie Doucette from Wedgeport, needless to say he won the tournament..
Let me see if I can find dates and what not...

That Mako shark is freakin' ridiculous. I could look at those pictures a 1000 times, and they never cease to amaze me. Sign me up!

Time to book my shark fishing adventure for the summer! Gotta beat my 11ft, 320lb Blue from last year.

Shark attacks are extremly rare in the Atlantic provinces.

Here's a little info regarding Mako's range and habitat in refernce of the atlantic provinces...
In the western Atlantic it can be found from Argentina and the Gulf of Mexico to Browns Bank, along the continental shelf of Nova Scotia and even into the Gulf of St. Lawrence. In Canadian waters these sharks are not abundant as they prefer warm waters, but neither are they rare. Shortfin makos are often found in the same waters as swordfish, as they are a source of food, and both fish prefer similar environmental conditions. In some years, warm water conditions can bring them closer to shore; in 2002 for example, several makos were caught during blue shark fishing derbies and as part of recreational shark fishing trips about 10 miles outside of Halifax Harbour. However, no makos have been observed within a mile of shore.

Anybody here seen an Aussie named Vic Hyslop? He's sort of like the Great White Hunter/Steve Irwin/Crocodile Dundee of sharks. He's crazy and he's no conservationist. To him the only good shark is a dead one.

I saw a show on him a few years back. Goes after Great Whites by himself 20-30 miles out in what looks something like an old 20 ft Princecraft center console. His only equipment was a good length of heavy rope, some huge hooks, bait and a heavy duty cleat system that he used to subdue the shark. The show I saw he caught a pair of 30 footers and dragged them all the way back to the mainland.

On the beach he checked there stomachs. Should have seen the stuff he pulled out. Dolphins (the mammal), huge sea turtles, sea lions and huge elephant seals.

Greenpeace and others hate this guy. Probably why you don't see him on TV much. He makes no apologies.
