How Many of you Keep Bass to Eat??

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

I just dont think you realy see the truth out there,,,,,mabe you chould go out,,,,,,,,,,and come fishing wit some fisherman

I am a fisherman like you said so nicely i keep about 10% off my fish mabe but i do keep some ,so i am not a sportsfisherman in your standard,,,,,,,,,,,,

I spend alot lot more in trip and cottage rental lures and all kind off thing
thene any bass fisherman could imagine,,,,

I keep my money to go fishing and buy some lures insted off a 50000

boat ....

sportsfisherman do spend a lot on one kind off tackle and fishing stuff,,,,
usely,,,,,,,,,bass,,,,,,,,,,,,,

I go in the verendry park a lot everyear go james bay go alot in the northen part off the province,,,,,,,,,you no what you only see fisherman no sporthfisherman

you chould go in a outfiter show and ask the % off fisherman compare to sporthfisherman,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

WE buy a lot more stuff and a lot more different kind,,,,,,,,,we dont stick to bass stuff,,,,,,,,,,,,,

I realy did not see where you got your number 10x more then fisherman

its true for the boat itself,,,,,and rods,,,,,,,,,,,

but the thing you said about the money you bring to little town,,,,,
sporthfisherman are not EVEN close to what fisherman bring to towsend and hundres off little town,,,,,,,,,,just every little town off north and all the park and all the cottage and all the fisherman boats,,,,,,,,

SO about the % off money return to the little town you are just in the field and far away,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

LIKE one said ,,,,,,,,,3 days ago,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,bass fisherman are different ,,,,

Not wanting to take sides i this but...

I'd have to say I also think that sportfisherman spend a little more in cash.. I work at a fishing store so I see this everyday. I mean theyre are some like Big-o and RJ who spend alot on what they love to do.. But I'd have to say comparing it to the big picture. I'd say the sportfisherman does buy larger quantities at a time.. This however might not mean he spends more, but I'm thinking it's quite possible they might.. LOL Gamblersteve does spend alot on equipment but you'd be surprised how amny guys like him are out there!

Just a thought

Regards

I would like to Thank every one who posted on this thread....We did get off track from the original Question, but there was no blood spilt.... and I hope that when we meet on the water that we all can smile about this Shake hands...and go fishing....Hamilton Steve, be looking forward that seat in your boat....maybe not this year, but next year for Sure, JohnyBass good luck on your new ride and the Quest for something to pull it with.... looking forward to your reports this summer Ratsotail... I'll see you on the water this summer, we will laugh about this :D , ( I hope)

Every spring the controversy over bass pops up…there has been some excellent views and opinions on this subject…I was surprised to see how many anglers enjoy a small feed of bass once and awhile, and there is nothing wrong with that, the same as the views for catch and release, we do have to protect our fishery…contrary to believe I keep very few bass ….I spend to much time on the big water looking for Salmon

I hope every one has a great season….be Safe out there, and remember…take lots of photos

I didn't want to turn this into a debate but I will :)

First of all. WHo puts them on a pedastal? I'm just saying they spend alot of money and are good for the economy.

First of all people I said for the most part.

I know a heck of alot of fisherman and for the MOST PART, the sportfisherman spends more money.

I do not doubt there are meat eaters that spend alot of monry also.

Most meat eaters are from small towns and buy rinky dink utility boatas, hooks, weight bobbers, ect and is sufficient for there need and that is great.

Sport fisherman ALL buy lures and lots of them, not to mention all the top of the line equipment.

Hey Joco. If your keeping less than 10% of your catch. I hate to break this too you, but you are a sport fisherman.lol

You do it mostly for sport.

I too would NEVER spend 40,000 on a boat. i would put a down payment on another house. ANd I will never buy really expensive gear because when they break down, it is as expensive as buying the thing brand new.

Yes you wont see many sport fisherman on James bay, But go try the strictly catch and release lakes up north. Like Knee lake.

Or the territories for Lake trout, grayling.

Most lakes up north are Walleye country(not a sport fish)

How many meat fishermen fly south for the winter?

Not only bass fisherman but Musky fisherman. Do you know how much money they spend on tackle? ANd they DO NOT eat Musky.

I think most meat eaters go to their local bait shops and not BPS and places like that. And like I said. there are always the exceptions.

I dont only have bass lures, I have lures that target every single fish.

But you may be right about the small towns. I know people come here even from the states to catch fish to bring home.

Who do you think would go through more lures? a guy that uses stricktly lures or a guy that uses lures only when his bait runs out?

Lures can really add up, especially for Musky fisherman.

There you go Joco. Straight from a guy that works at a fish store. like I said. Meat eaters for the MOST part. Buy line hooks, weights, and bait and they are off. Thats all you need if you fish for meat, especially from shore, and lets face it. Most fisherman fish from shore.

BIG-O I doubt anyone is offended by anything. we are just sharing opinions.

I have my opinion and backed it up and you have your opinion and backed it up.

Just a friendly debate :)

Johnny Bass,

First off.....I am not a guide.....I don't know where you got that idea.....but I assure you I'm not....yet...

I do have to disagree with you.....and leave it at that....

I will add this though.......for someone who almost preaches let the key breeders go.....I saw a great string of pictures on OFN of you in your garage/kitchen with great breeder walleyes.......practice what you preach....

Enjoy your new boat.....she's a beaut!....and welcome to the world of sportfisherman....

Spence,

Reality is in my mind......50% of folks that fish eat what they catch...coincidentally in most cases they are the least experienced anglers out there.....what we have on this site is a bunch of fairly experienced anglers.....and some that are well on their way to becoming great anglers thru the help of others.....

Everyone keep in mind......this isn't a crime.....if someone wants to keep fish.....no matter what size.....as long as the regs say it's ok for them to do it.....then it's fine.....some may not agree....but that's life......you can't always get what you want.....

Well said.
As long as the angler(s) practice within the legal limits then all is good. Saying that it is not good for a resource to keep a limit of fish day every day for a year.
Cheers
JP
practice catch and release and the fishery will reward you down the road, but it's ok to eat one or 2 in the process :)

Hey Rj. Trust me, to keep those pickeral was heart wrenching. I was pressured by the people I was with. My Cousins, my dad,ect..

But there were millions of them and all about the same size. Something tells me that I didn't even put a dent in that fishery.

And RJ. I'm saying that it is fine for people to catch fish. Lets face it. There are more meat eaters than sport fisherman.

I'm just saying that if you want fisheries to continue to produce fish, you have to put a few breeders back. Some of us have at least 20+ years left of fishing. ANd I would not want to see the fish stocks depleted.

In my personal opinion, I would make it illegal to keep big breeders(sorry guys). In smaller bodies of water. Then you wouldn't have to stock lakes.

Its like chatching a fish out of season, Its sometimes hard to release them when its a beauty, but it is the right thing to do.
