spinning reels vs baitcasters

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Just bought a baitcaster this spring. Strangely the cast is much like my golf swing, it too has a slice. When I'm casting the damn thing it always seems to want to go right of the target. Now I am new to baitcasting, so in time I may get a little better, but I actually only bought it more for trolling.

Any suggestions on curing my baitcasting slice?

Anyways I like spincast

I run them in 4 classes from light up to medium/heavy, then the baitcaster as another medium heavy and finally a 6wt fly rod.

It's a great 6 pack for all outings.

Thehoser, you like to catch trees too? You should have seen the oak I had to leave in the forest last week, it was a beauty. Every now and again I go for docks, locks, even myself sometimes...

kingmann....when the fish aren't biting I start tossing lures into trees to catch birds. Actually caught a seagull couple of years ago. Stupid thing grabbed my lure right out of the air. Now that was a fight reeling him in

HA! ED got another one. I see he used the old "I use this set up for skipping tubes under docks" sales pitch. He got me last year with that one...

Now I have two spinning setups. A set up for skipping tubes (which I still don't know how to do)...

Chepbstrd, I think we need to get Ed to take us to the rideau for an evening of skipping.

Moosebunk, cast straight over your head for strait casts, not side arm. and use the rod to launch the bait not your arm.

Also if you are just starting out with a baitcaster, when you bring your rod back over your head in an overhand cast, stop it before you bring it forward. This will cut down on the amount your rod is loaded up with excess energy, therefore decreasing the chance of you getting an overrun right at the beginning of your cast.

furious....could you please explain that again? the g/f and I read your post several times and don't get it. I'd love to be able to reduce birds nests and she won't even try a baitcaster after watching me.

It's kinda like a golf swing. If you watch a golfer he swings in one fluid motion. If he stops his swing when his club reaches the top of the swing over his head he loses a ton of momentum. His club flexes just like a fishing rod. When you really load up a casting rod with an overhand cast, and do it all in one motion you can really fly your bait out there. The bird nest you often get starts at the beginning of the cast, as that is when you're spool is spinning the fastest. But if you stop your backcast you cut down on all that extra energy. It took my wife no time to learn how to cast once she figured that out. Go figure, she's a Science Teacher and noticed that if she stopped she could cast better. Once she figured it out she started casting faster and harder until she as up to speed. Another trick I found was to go to a large open area on a windy day and cast with the wind, if you start to get an overrun the wind will help by pulling off more line and sometimes it will sort itself out. The tip of using heavy mono really works as well. Hope this helps.

Well Guys

I have 15 spinning rods and reels every thing from Quantum pt's , Fluger trion, abu tourment 2000, diawa's ,A pile of shimano's and even one called tsuami(4000)The Quntum pt's are head and shoulders above the rest....Anyway I have tried bait casters..I have three(thanks king-Me)still can't get the heck of using them :? So I make do with the equipment I can use...I do use level winds on my down rigger rods! I am buying a couple of rods to try those level winds that King-me gave to me...But I would'ent hold my breath on me mastering them  I still think I can out cast a bait caster, most of the time....(well maybe)  :P  .....It's all what you are use to!!!!

Baitcasters Rule!.. :P

They take a bit of practice but are worth the frustration in the long run...the accuracy of your casts and the subtle bait entry into the water are the selling points to baitcasters for me....

the best thing one could do is get a heavy bait on...head out on the water and practice....tighten yoru brake system right up...then as you get used to it start to back off the brakes...you'll get it!...and will be happy you did.. :)

subtle bait entry? Can a reel influence how the bait hits the water?

Always have fished with a spinning reel! Tried Spin Caster recently total waste of money. I get more control with the Spinning Reel. The push button crap is garbage. I think it's harder for a beginner to learn with a Spin Caster. It seems to tangle more and you have to take the whole face off the reel!! Never tried a bait caster before. Cast is not very accurate with the push button Spin Caster.
