For sure! Love having the dog in the boat with me for company, always keeps me company when i go out alone. I have a border collie, it took a while at first to get her trained to be relaxed and not try and jump in the water lol! Sure wasn't anything a couple of cookies and training couldn't fix though. You'll always here about the bad stories about guys getting there dog hooked and stuff like that, I'd just make sure you're comfortable fishing around the dog.

Re: Take the dog fishing?
Great thread......I've got a new dog I'll be taking on her maiden voyage this spring. Sure hope she turns out to be a good sailor!
I think only YOU can answer the question, because as you said, it definitely depends on the dog's temperament.
If you've got a dog that fits the bill, by all means, take them along. Our dogs have always loved the boat, and one in particular gets the whole fishing thing, including what it means when the drag is peeling or one of us says "Got one!" He is in tons of our fish pictures, because he wants to be right there in the thick of the action.
Just like with kids, it's your responsibility to keep your dog safe. It's your job to keep lures put away and cast with care. Drive the boat in a way that won't throw your dog overboard.
One more thing you might want to keep in mind: temperature. Some dogs are really heat sensitive, and a boat can get HOT. Carry water for your dog and maybe leave them home or at the cottage if you're planning on being out mid-day in the peak of summer heat.
Dogs are great company in the boat if the fit is right! Hope you and your dog can enjoy some great times together on the water.

Thanks, Dad, for taking me fishing when I was a kid.

Well, it looks like there will be one very happy black lab as soon as the ice is off the lakes. Good call on keeping him cool - my little tin boat can get hot on those long summer afternoons. Thanks for all the responses guys, let you know how he does on his first trip out!
Re: Take the dog fishing?

My dog looks out onto the lake and then at me and growls in a low voice if we don't have a fish in the boat within the hour. When you hook one she is right beside you waiting for you to bring it in...and then she wants to sniff it and barks at it if flops around. She loves the whole experience but does not like fishing in the rain even when I have made her waterproof quarters.
