Well...
Spence- the first link is to an article dealing with Montreal area waters.
The second is to a five-year-old two paragraph blurb contained in a general article about the St. Lawrence River as a whole.
Your reference to garbage in the River, presumably, is based on Montreal area waters as it is not accurate when referring to the 1000 Islands region.
As far as I am concerned, they may be part of the same river, but you cannot compare the waters of the 1000 Islands region with waters downstream from Montreal...

Re: Well...
Agreed - I've sailed through both areas taking ships to Port Weller, last time was 2003....BIG DIFFERENCE in water quality between Montreal and the upper sections of the Larry.Cancatchbass wrote:Spence- the first link is to an article dealing with Montreal area waters.

There are few problems in life which can not be solved with a well-placed, high-explosive projectile.

Well regardless what you see as clean could be a differnt thing tottally to me im used to fishing small clear lakes and spring fed lakes around the lanark areas. So when i fish the ottawa to me it looks like a garbage dump... Plastic bags, cans, bikes, bottles, paper, oil film, etc.....
So your clean to me could be a totally differnt thing..

Spence- you're really confusing me now-
"So when i fish the ottawa to me it looks like a garbage dump... Plastic bags, cans, bikes, bottles, paper, oil film, etc..... "
What does this have to do with the 1000 Islands region of the St. Lawrence?
I haven't been on the Ottawa for a couple of years, but it was a whole different ballgame from the St. Lawrence then.

I agree SS dosen't have a clue what he is talking about......however while the "River" (what we call the St Larry locally) looks very clear and clean something dosen't seem quite right.
When I snag bottom often I'm able to pull free and what I haul up (usually empty zebra mussel shells, muck and weeds) stinks like something rotting. Many of the weeds I see aren't nice green coontail or leafy cabbage but black/green stringy junk weed. I've seen the same weed in watersheds where there is sewage or near farms.
CCB would know better than I on the condition of the river. He lives and works on it. I admit we see clouds of mayflies on late spring/summer nights which knowing what I do of mayflies...demand clean water and are like the canary in the coal mine when it comes to pollution. They first reappeared about a decade ago after at least a 50 year absence. However I have observed even they are not as numerous as 5 years ago. Perhaps it's nothing more than a population readjustment after an initial bust.
They tell us it's cleaner than when I was a kid but again I'm not sure......the fishing isn't anywhere near as good. Not even close. We never had the walleyes there are now but the bass and pike fishing were light years better.
