October 16th - Night Walleye

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Actually, it's not clear in the regs. I just hope people are asking the right questions when they call.

Of course it's not illegal to guide your way with a headlamp, or have the proper boat lighting on even use a light to assist with a net.

The original question was is it illegal to scan the water with a light to find the glowing eyes of fish and cast to them.....since then it has strangely changed to using the light to see where to cast. That is fine. I'm just curious as to what fedback different offices and provinces will have.

I'm sure CCB will get to the bottom of it and ask all the right questions. I'd like to hear back from Dave too and hopefully 1 other person can put a call into Quebec too.

Good topic.

Confusion?

Post by Cancatchbass »

The local C.O. says it is legal to search for fish with a light, then cast to them. No limitations on the power of the lamp- I asked if you could use a million cp spotlight to locate fish- he says "perfectly legal".

He also says lighted bobbers are no problem.

Fires and lanterns on the shore (such as used by bullheaders)? "No problem".

C.O.'s name is Ben Kelly (613-539-8165). Covers most of Leeds/Grenville.

Seems to contaradict what I have seen in the regs. :?

CCB that's what the CO I talked to in Peterborough said too.

It seems to depend on which CO you talk to! I don't remember the name of the one I talked to but when I go back up I'll get his name.

I think to be safe, just dont do it!

If the regs says it's illegal..It doesn't matter what a CO says.
So take the writtenword over the spoken!!

It's been beaten to death, but CB the regs aren't actually clear. They say it's illegal to use a light to ATTRACT fish. Technically scanning the water to look for eyes isn't an attractant.

But you are right, for goodness sakes just don't do it!

Ya that is all I'm tryin to say. 'Cause if ya get a CO on a bad day he may just view what you are doing as the wrong thing...so who will the courts believe?

Sheesh, I hope no-one here has ever exceeded the speed limit a little. That'd make you a law breaking menace to society. Shining a light in the water.... now thats a crime!

lights wont attract walleye.....anyone who has ever put a light on a walleye would probably agree that they had a hard time getting it to bite after that. They know that something isnt right, they know that the light is not supposed to be there and something is "fishy".
