Wow this thing took off and a lot of great responses here. Just what I thought that a large majority voted for water fishing.

Unlike Moosebunk most of us are not going to see more then 3 months of ice and a few weeks ether side of so it's possible to fish 8 months of soft water.

Bigbass44 also mentioned the anticipation of waiting for a flag to go off..... well I guess it's the same as trolling.

I also remember when I was a bait fisherman without a boat where I would make many trips to lake Ontario to fish warm water outlets. One spot in particular got better on the coldest days of February.

I also remember all the derbies those were fun as well, especially the OC Transpo one.

I suppose this is a question of lifestyle too. Every answer is a right answer. There are no wrong answers. For me it's all seasonal. Jan 1 is downhill skiing season. Easter signals the end of skiing & it's time to break out the bicycle. The end of April is turkey season. Bass is the target 80+% of the time, so I don't hit the water till just before bass season opener. I had been riding 4000+km a year which consumes a lot of free time. With the grandkids now @ 5 & 3yrs old, cycling has taken a big hit and a lot more time is spent in poppa's boat instead. That has caused a rediscovery of fishing for me and a realization of how much I really missed bass fishing. As bass season winds down archery starts and goes to Dec 31.
I go ice fishing twice a year. The "boys at work" have two derby's each year. They are always a lot of fun regardless of how good the fishing is.
To answer the question: Give me 6240 acres of open water.............the Merc purrin' & the Legend up on plane.........all the rods ready & the tackle bag jammed full of goodies.......a big thermos of coffee & few Ruby Red grapefruit drinks on ice..........calm waters & a light breeze from the west...........all the cares and worries of the world being blown away briefly as you mash down on the throttle, tweak the trim & turn the Fish-Hawk hat on backwards so it doesn't get blown off.................but that's just me.

It's a fun way to spend an afternoon.

On this site, I find the chatter is mostly form guys without boats, or guys with crap boats or paddle type boats. When the water is frozen, it's the cheapest and easiest way for them to get further form shore on a variety of lakes.

There's no towing expense, ramp fees, boat costs and it's easy for them to get their social group together and sit for a day. Gear is relitively cheap too, so it makes it easier to get involved with when funds are tight.

so your saying its because some dont have boat ,that they ice fish......?

or because they dont have a lot off$ they ice fish.?

there is a lot off people that have boats here and still fish ice.

dont realy see your point here.

and its not because as acrapp boat or paddle boat or wathever boat.....any boat can go anywhere on water...

did it ever ocured to you that people make choice..........

i realy dont think its as to do wot people having a boat or not. an if it those realy small%.

tons off my friend own big boat and ice fish.

and the poele that own crap boat or paddle boat usely can cover even more water then bigger boat...in small lake and river.

and wit your......On this site, I find the chatter is mostly form guys without boats, or guys with crap boats or paddle type boats...

ho you talking about.for the paddle type, must be me..there is not a tons in here..and for your reason your saying your way out bud.

I hope I'm not going to get ridiculed again because my opinion falls outside that of the mass majority.

Dropshot'r, anyone that's offended by comments likely already has a good idea what a crap boat is.

Not to worry, folks...

I'm still waiting for Taylor's very first fishing report....I'm still not convinced he's ever casted a line.

Then again, perhaps his "crap" boat would show up in the pic! 8)

As for the ice fishing versus open water fishing...

I'll say this. I love both activities, but for me, there's something special about wearing shorts and a t-shirt, pitching a jig to a dock and doing battle with a 5lb largie. That is were my heart truly lies...
But I have some great days on the ice, and it does the trick until summer reappears once again.

Perhaps we should of thrown hunting into the mix??

Good Fishing,
Justin
