Bass Pro Shop in Ottawa

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

So that's why The Chandlery is called "The Chandlery"

Now you have to explain a poop deck...

In naval architecture, a poop deck is a deck that constitutes the roof of a cabin built in the aft (rear) part of the superstructure of a ship. The fantail is an overhang at the extreme rear of the ship, aft of the poop deck and closer to level with the main deck. The name originates from the French word (la poupe) for stern. This makes the poop deck technically called a stern deck, which in sailing ships was usually elevated as the roof of the stern (or 'after') cabin. In sailing ships, with the helmsman at the stern, an elevated position was ideal for both navigation and observation of the crew and sails.

The deck above the after cabin is the poop deck. On modern, motorized warships, the ship functions which were once carried out on the poop deck are moved to the superstructure in the center of the ship (or the island on the starboard side, in the case of aircraft carriers).

In nautical parlance, "to be pooped" means to have a wave come over the stern from abaft. (That means from the back)

Gotta love the Internet.

BPS rumors

Post by Big Jim »

Hey Guy's, the next BPS store to open is Calgary and the Montreal store shorlty after, realistically in 2010...

There are no plans for Ottawa or Kingston and there never was. It takes over three hundred employees with great knowledge to run a store like that and the one in Toronto is among the most successful they have.
Also requires a vast population base to draw business from and I am sure we don't qualify from that angle...maybe in 20 years though.

Remember the rumors that circled Toronto for 15 years before the store opended...of course it happened in Toronto...its called population base.

I guess the only way you know for sure is to read the press releases as they come from their head office...the only people who know where the next store is are real good at keeping secrets...its called good business.

Take Care

Thanks Big Jim for confirming where the next stores will be. And thanks Bobber for the kind words and support.
I for one am glad a Bass Pro will not be coming to Ottawa but that is from a business perspective and I'm sure the other smaller retailers would agree that would hurt our business.
I too however go into the Bass Pro when in Auburn shopping the Finger Lakes for other stuff and without a doubt usually come out with stuff in my cart! Although we purchase through BPS' wholesale division and carry many of their products in our store visiting the store in person allows me to see the new products out, check out quality, colours, etc and make better decisions on what I want to carry in my store.
There is very seldom an order that I do not have something special ordered for someone through BPS. Most people have realized that the shipping/duty/brokerage costs do not make it cheaper to order online. However, if driving right by the store of course go in. They are a tourist attraction and the aquarium, wildlife mounts, etc. are awesome.
I have heard numerous times however that local prices are as cheap if not cheaper than the Toronto store (sometimes even on BPS branded products!)
I, as well as all the other small family owned tackle business owners try their best to provide their customers with the best service possible as well as the best price. We'll never be Bass Pros (although if I had the space Mike would tell you I could find a way to fill it!)
Keep supporting your local shops folks! We actually appreciate it!!!

Just read the post about how a BPS would be good in kingston.
The city acutally does not have any more good bait shops. And the canadian tire is actually one of the best selections of gear i have found anywhere. The department is run by a guy who had a tackle shop in town and it went under because no one in kingston bothers to buy from the little guy. I agree that a BPS should not be in ottawa But t would be nice to have a bit bigger shop here in orleans. Ozilies however is a good shop and has everything i need. And he owner is always super helpfull with suggestions on where to go and how to get 'em.
Just say no to big box stores.

I was at BPS in Vaughn over the long weekend. While they did have a very extensive array of fly tying materials, I did note that they were, indeed, more expensive than any of the local shops that I've been to.

On the other hand, the store itself is very impressive and worth a visit for none other than the WOW! appeal.

Just my $0.02 worth.

Rybren, check out Float Paddle and Fly in the old White Rose plaza in Bells Corners. They have a nice selection of fly tying materials and are expanding continually.

Bondo,

I've been there - but not long after they opened. FP&F's prices are better than BPS, however, at the time, their selection was somewhat limited.

I haven't had the opportunity to make the trek across the city for a while, but I hope to pop in over the weekend.

speaking of fly fishing. renzetti vice would cost well over 200 down here. You could easely get it online for 149 (including postage). e-z rotary - well over 100, against 45. I defienetly agree - local split shots might be cheaper. I also agree it is nice to have a good conversation. But not for that price.

While prices may not be comparable to the big chains, the customer service is typically over and above what you receive. If you had a problem with a big ticket item purchase online, you'd most likely be looking at weeks or months before equipment is replaced or repaired. My experience with local shops is that you're most likely going to recieve an immediate replacement or at least be offered a "loaner" until yours is returned.

For me customer service trumps price every time, unless of course the price difference is simply outrageous.
