It might be time to ban ice fishing

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Although I can appreciate the concern over lack of respect by some who pollute I think there is a much easier solution than banning ice fishing.

Bait shops and marinas who charge and allow access should be responsible for the people they allow on the ice, if you allow idiots then you should pay.

People are pigs, most anyways, and don't give a rats butt about the next guy who comes along...that's just todays society,,,,sad,,,,and if you allow it to happen around you then you are just as much to blame as the guy doing it........pick up the garbage and dump it on the hood of their car or block the entrance to their shack with it....if they assault youo then have them arrested for littering and assault

And it's pretty easy to attack the person who brings the problem up ......

The city does it, the people do it, the residents do it...so lets all do it.....what kind of sensible logic is that???????????

The arguments to the idea of this thread are so freekin juvenile it's pathetic...

Way to go FH.......bash people without even offering a reasonable solution to the problem.

blah blah blah

wow this tread is gething to the people. :?

and its actualy good.

people have to be educate and to say its wrong to do this.

wathever what we do or say there always gone to be some garbage on water or shore or weherever..some people are just PIGS.plain and simple.

i am sher you go to there house and its the same thing. all over the lawn i see some lawn where is it full off garbage and still dont care so you guy wont make them pick up after them..there just no brainer.

but its great to see the topic is fire....and yes its so sad to see this happening all over not just on ice..but at some shore fishing spots or some island camping ground or any fishing place or canoeing place.

the bestits tohelp the community heart day project and go there and heklp clean those shore etc.

show the people.the good and right way to go.

some will never luren but.some will do.

might be time to go back to some ice fishing tread now..only like a few weeks to go.

if everyone make is little part it will go a long way.

please clean up after you own and if you can pick up few more its even better.

later

I agree - when we see someone flicking butts onto the ice, we need to tell them that they are littering, and that it is destructive behaviour. We need a critical mass of people who are disgusted by littering to get the minority who litter to straighten up.

I've taken lots of trash out from the lakes I fish, I think it is left there more by people that party there than fishing types, but if everyone does this it will add up. I would bet that most people here on FH have done the same thing.

This past summer I pulled 4 beer bottles off a lake, they were floating with the neck above water. When I got back to the ramp, I was wondering if the police had stopped me, might be hard to explain the empty bottles in my boat!! :?

What really irks me is when people finish a bottle, fill it with water and let it sink to the bottom. I have had words with people about this while out on the lakes....

If you check these out and are not moved ,,,,then you are part of the problem....

If an organized clean up can be co-ordinated for FH members....I'll personally contribute $150.00 worth of meat ,supply the BBQ and BBQ it for an after cleanup gathering.

Anyone else???

Wallyboss wrote:Actually mosty of the garbage seen from the road is just pieces of wood and saw dust. It looks a lot worst than what it is. I am not saying that it's right. There is the odd can or something stuck in the ice and now that the ice is melting we start seeing them.

I only saw two spots that were left by people that don't give a darn about the environment . One is a shack that was made out of white plastic an it is still outhere. and the other place is where there is a couple of wood pallets that were left on the ice. But if you go for a ride right on the ice you will see that it looks a lot worse from the road.
This is from someone who ACTUALLY knows what's going on there....I think everyone should read it again......

I still don't see why a workable FH community effort can't be considered and proposed instead of continueous back patting for negative replies.

Or is that how we should all reply????

No offence Matt....but when someone who is down there every week fishing says its not that bad other than a bit of wood is left on the ice it's hardly time to circle the wagons....at least in my eyes....but I'm stupid.

Probably no reason why it can't be considered but a separate thread might give your idea/proposal a fresher set of legs and a more receptive audience.

UPDATE : Looks like joco had the right idea.

RJ...I would not any any level consider you stupid...on the contrary you are well respected in my eyes , an accomplished angler and therefore your opinion is appreciated and well taken.

IMO..the garbage we see is much more spread than just Petrie...NO???

Thinkin outside the box here...I have been down many times this year and although it's not my ideal outing or preferred choice I stll like to see it respected.

I think the concern is genuine.

but other area like down town down hull/ottawa or all over the shores frome aylmer to orleans,,its worst then up in renfrey for an ex.

i think that subject and tread been stab do death.

joco..lets do something and stop complaining abou it....complaining wont change mutch. the action will.

So, two of my buddies and I decided to plunk a few lines in some holes around walleye bay tonight as a group of us were catching only a few small guys earlier this morning...I was seeking revenge and did not even think back to this thread while looking around out there..

We brought in two skids, some hacked pieces 2x6 wood scraps lodged into the ice, 9 pop cans I think and one disposable propane tank . Except for the odd broken beer bottle and dog feces there really wasn't that much 'trash'....We left the skids at the entrance of Walleye Bay as there was not much else we could do with them.

There are three large skids and some other debris in the area we were fishing this morning and I will do my best to bring what I can to shore with me tomorrow...Wallyboss, your quad would really help with two of those(Right off of the point) and I can help ya out this weekend. If your up for it I wouldn't mind doing our best to get the big white tarped shack off the ice as I can see it really being a hazard in the springtime ..Shouldn't take more than and hour clean the place up...I am sure there are a few other commited as well and hopefully the ice conditions will allow for us to get out there...

The big question that has had me pondering and I have talked to a few others about this is where are all the garbage cans at Petrie? There's a chip truck down there and porta potties on the ice...should there not be somewhere for fisherman to throw out garbage on the ice while huts are permitted or anytime for that matter? I am sure if there was four or five(A can or two for each bay) cans maybe at the entrance/access point ...This would really help with a lot of the smaller trash items we fisherman always have kickin' around. Just a thought, it doesn't take much to empty a few cans once a week. If they were out there and visable to everyone I have no doubt they would get used ...I know it's not Petires responsibility to do this there is no harm in showing a cleaner image down there... I just might not have seen them

I did my part...

Bruce, the chair is gone

I'm in for Sat. morning. Anytime before then I wouldn't be able to bring the Quad though, we are playing musical vehicle at home because of my son's car being broken down and not replaced yet.
When hell freezes over, I'll be there icefishing!!!

I never wanted to ban ice fishing for god's sake, it was a way to get people's attention which it did. But I did want people to think and take actions as there is no way in this day and age we can leave this much of a mess on the ice every single spring.

Yes we need to stop the city ( and villages etc ) from poluting our rivers, but I think as a small bunch of anglers here on FH I think there isn't much we can do about that but we can do a lot when it comes to help clean up this mess and maybe even come up with a way to stop it. This doesn't mean not to contact your town reps ( provincial and federal as well ) to give them your piece of mind.
Catch and release them all
