East of The Bay

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

That is one fantastic two week trip. Thank you very much for sharing. I'm still trying to figure out how you got those 2 large pike in the bottom of a fully loaded canoe. :)

Great job.

Often looked at the James Bay Highway website and thought about making a tour. Truck could handle it, but trailers and boats would take the beating. LG3 & 4 would be the destinations for pike... not much one for canoeing but your post surely inspires. Portaging must have been limited judging by your menu.

I think you're right about big pike hanging with other big pike. Surely the big pike don't hang with the little ones.

Glad someone bumped this. Thanks for taking the time.

Thank you for the kind comments.

Moosebunk:
Yes, portaging was limited. Maybe 5km total in 2 weeks? With the heavy 17 foot Royalex tripping canoes and all of our luxuries, we had to triple carry over the portages. Normally you would expect to lose weight on a trip this long, but I think we all gained a couple of pounds. Beer and lawn chairs was the theme of the trip. ;)

Although we did have some trouble with a trailer and one truck on the trip, I wouldn't be too worried about it. The trailer had rusty frame rails and should never have been brought on the trip. The truck had a wheel bearing go bad, which could have happened at any time. Oh ya, the same truck had the windshield smashed by flying large rocks in construction zones twice! I think this was just bad luck though. My Jeep takes more of a beating on the average weekend fishing trip than it did on this trip.

There were many many RVs pulling boats on the JB highway. There was everything from 14 foot tinnys to 20+ foot walleye boats with 200hp. Some guys were driving $1/4 million worth of toys up that highway. The highway itself is paved and not too bad. The dirt roads are quite good, but could beat up anything after a few hundred kms. As long as you have a heavy duty trailer and it is in good shape, you should be fine. I would bring a couple of spare tires and wheel bearings for the trailer just in case. Another thing I noticed was that almost every boat had a rock guard on the trailer.
