Guys you have some beautiful rigs. I do have a question for you. I have never owned a truck ,however, when it is time for the van to be replaced it will hopefully be with a truck. I have a 14footer with a 15 on it. I also haven't done any deep back woods lake trips. Although, it is something I would like to try. Is the added cost of a 4*4 really a good idea for what I tow. Also, do any of you rear wheel drive only truck owners have any trouble at the launches. I guess if I had the 4*4 I might be a little braver in tackling some of the old non maintained roads.

Thanks

hi

my father never had a 4/4 i baught more then 10 truck..always 2 weel drive.some wit a lock deferentiel,,good in the mud and a pair off chain behind the seats.

i tell you a lock deferentiel and a pair off shain on it.is better then any 4 weel drive..i saw that off my own eyes at lest 4 time at the cottage..on ice in some hill.4 weel drive were goign side way the 2 weel drive power on shain was going up like nothing...a good 150$ very well spend.

do you need a 4 weel drive mabe not.

but wen you launch aboat in a sandy beach or on icy boat launch...you would love your 4/4.

if you bring the truck on ice for some ice fishing.you would love your 4/4.

but tons off guy do witout it.

but think about it.wen you buy a 4/4........the extra monney..you will get it back went you will sell it. and more easy to sell.

Now at 6'2" I don't think I'd fit in one of these rolling tennis shoes, but it actually has better crash tests than any other compact and even many midsized cars...
I'd likely lose my shins in an accident but they are built like tanks...

Maybe you can tow with it if you have the 4x4 package...

I towed something similiar to what you have behind a 2WD Dakota for several years and never had a problem at even the worst of launches. However with the bass boat, I have had some problems sliding down/spinning up cement ramps that are strewn with gravel or sand. If you are planning on getting a bigger/heavier boat in the not-too-distant future, 4WD is something to consider.

Like I said earlier I wish I had 4WD. I have never been stuck with my 2WD but combine towing a heavy boat with lots of winter driving over country roads, my next truck will definitely be a 4WD.

Hi Joco,

I have never owned a truck before and I was wondering what exactly lock diferential was and why it's an awesome thing to have on two wheel drive truck?

I think I may have a winter hobby this year. I will spend those cold dark days educating myself about the different trucks and all of the truck terminology.

Thanks

Some say having 4x4 just means you stuck worse and farther from home

Pickups are rear wheel drive and most of the weight is over the front wheels. I have owned a few 2 wheel drive trucks. Mostly when I used to do a lot of snowmobiling. I would run into a lot of trouble with parking back then in 2 wheel drive. the lots in winter are always coverd in snow and ice. Add a trailer with 2 snowmobiles in tow and it was never fun.
I had a small 14ft boat that I would fish and even hunt late into the fall with. I never really had a problem as the boat was on the light side.

But I would never go back to a 2 wheel drive truck today. I have a larger 18ft boat now. 4 x 4 is always on at the launch. I even use 4x4 auto when Im driving in winter on a snow coverd road. I remember once when I owned an older 1988 truck with 4x4. I pulled into a gas station just after an ice storm had passed. There was this man with a brand new ford f150 it was red. He was all proud of his new truck. lol. My truck a rusted out chev maybe 15 yrs older than his. Well he jumped into his truck and the lot was coverd with ice. I still remember his face as his truck just moved side to side spinning on the ice. I jumped into my truck already in 4 high and with a trailer in tow I gave him a node and drove away smiling. the morel of my story..... Buy a older model truck with 4 wheel drive if you can't afford the option on a new truck. In the end you will be happy. And your truck will be worth more down the road when you sell it.

I've never owed a 4 wheel drive truck and been towing large boats since 2000 and always fish until ice up.

I was out the last 4 days and had no problems getting out. Sure I had to shovel and salt the launch ramp but I think a 4x4 would of needed the same attention.

I just don't think it's worth the extra cost and weight as well as fuel costs for the couple of times a year where a 4x4 might be better.

I did have to get towed up a ramp 2 years ago when it was covered in 8 inches of snow.
Catch and release them all
