Fishboy wrote:I know many of you love it, but anytime I've been ice-fishing I've found it incredibly boring. As such, I understand how alcohol can make it endurable. I know there's the socializing stuff the fresh air, etc.... but I didn't have to go out on the friggin' ice to chat with my friends and get a breath of fresh air. :?

As an alternative to drinking, have any of the drinkers thought about reading a book, rehearsing their roles for their up-coming local theatre productions, taking a distance education course, bird-watching, or any other edifying activities during those idle hours of waiting on the ice for fish to bite?

Most of you are very responsible, I'm sure. However, alcohol on the water in any season is setting the stage for potential problems including the endangerment of someone else's life. For those of you who drink while ice fishing, do you only take the 2 beers you wrote about or an entire case? Do you honestly limit yourselves to just two?

As for the comments about lighting a spliff....please tell us you're joking. If not, when exactly do you graduate emotionally & intellectually from adolescence?
Now that was a response with information I would never have expected on a fishing site   ...But hey if that floats your boat then why not but don't expect guys who actually enjoy ice fishing and socializing together to really care about bird watching when most birds are south for the winter...The local productions when the last time some of us went to the NAC was for a comedian who curses more then my grandma...Taking a distance education course when we don't care how far a distance it is to walk to the case of beer cause we were going there anyway to check the ice on the hole...and reading a book if you call the latest edition of precision trolling or OOD a book then yup we do that out there but while having a beer

Come on now to each their own and my each is moderation and fun...I have a son to come home to now 8)

Well, Jasonb, were those boys rehearsing their nude scenes for their local plays but chickened out at the last minute?

Rehearsing for a play? Bird watching?Reading a book?

You sound like my Mum Fishboy!
No offence but c'mon now!

Are you serious?????

Alot of guys go out on the ice. Have a few "smokes" or beers.
These are the same guys who probably busted their "rear's" (Like that one Andy?) all week at work.

The key word here is M-O-D-E-R-A-T-I-O-N!

Being drunk or high to the point where you can't tell your rearhole from your fishing hole means you have issues!

Fishboy you have your movies mixed up a bit. That's a broke ice flow not a brokeback mountain!!!!!

But what does enjoying the sunshine while icefishing have anything to do with drinking while icefishing?? The coolers are there to bring back the fish.

What were you guys drinking/smoking if you didn't get the humour in my post about alternatives to drinking while ice-fishing?

Hey, if you feel it necessary to take the edge off the excitement of icefishing by having a few pops, knock yourselves out. I'll be at home tying flies and sipping on a glass of 18 year old Macallan.

Jamsers - Your Mum has a baritone voice, too?

I don't drink while fishing (ice or water), as I believe beer (or whatever) is for after the fishing is done....that being said, it doesn't concern me what others do when they fish, unless you're in my lane on the way home...

Fishboy: I knew what you were getting at but thought I would explain why this would not work for some...Some people dont understand you crazy fly fishers and your humour  ...While you are making some new flies could you make one for me in bumble bee colours...Mostly black with a few strands of gold/yellow would be good...About 2" in length and make it so it will catch some trout for me...And while you are at it throw me some of that 18 age Macallan....mmmmmmm
