If you had only one tip to share with somebody that is new to fishing what would that tip be?????
My tip would probably be to match fishing line to species and clarity of water that will be fished most often!
What would your tip be.

Mine would be don't be cheap on your line purchase. If I had only one purchase to spend extra money on, it would be line. I've seen to many people complaining about line breaking, twisting all that stuff. I've taking people out with me fishing throwing the same lure right beside me and they get nothing. It's all in the line. I can get by with a cheaper reel or rod but not with line.
Remember your line is the only connection between you and the fish

I would have to say, to use the right rods/reels for the type of fishing you are doing. Like if your trolling for lakers with downriggers use a downrigger rod. Or if you are fishing for smallies with tubes use a spinning rod of the right size for that species.
Too small or too big of equipment will just make the fishing experience worse. I have also ruined some of my rods/reels in the past by using it for the wrong applications

Mine would be this...
If you have a boat and your budget allows, invest in a depth finder. Doesn't need all the bells & whistles, but I think having this tool in your boat gives you a tremendous advantage to learning a lake and finding depths and structure -- which will ultimately give you a great advantage in finding and boating fish.
For shore fisherman, I would share the tip to change presentation frequently 'til you find something that works. Have a good, basic assortment of versatile baits / lures to tempt the fish with. This includes not only appearance but speed presentations.

Be patient..
Don't expect to get the "BIG ONE" (unless you have Marcus's horseshoe

)
All the best line, lures, rods and reels won't catch fish if they have a case of lock jaw.
Don't be afraid to use some of the simpler setups,,(isuch as live bait )

Fish for various species during the right time of year.
When I started fishing regularly I spent way to much and money time driving into remote trout ponds and getting bug bitten and skunked in August.
1. Trout right after ice-out dependant on regs and if the water is cold enough in the fall before the seaons closes (I usually fish DIV 15)
2. Walleye, (I have a tough time catching them), but get most of them in the spring around here.
3. Bass throughout the summer....
4. Pike, nice ones in the spring and fall but seem to catch them throughout the summer consistently
5. Muskie???? Seems to me lots of people catch them in the fall but I haven't been targeting them in my canoe!
Also try to fish every style that is available to you. Try trolling, jigging, fly fishing, fishing the "slop", ice fishing etc...

Check the natural bait the fish are eating.... i find most of the time if they are hitting on flies or tonnes of minnows, put your rod away and watch the show....

Fish with other people!!!
I can't tell you how much I learned last year just by being around other fishermen!! You learn about techniques, lures, equipment, how to find fish, etc etc...
And since we have such a great community here, you'll probably have very little problem finding someone willing to go fishing with ya!!!

The best fishing tip I ever got came in two parts:
When I was a kid my Dad always said :
"Go where the fish are" - (meaning don't waste your time on low percentage bodies of water);
A few years later, Marcel (owns the lodge we stay at on Jan when we're home every year) said -
"Its a big lake and they're biting somewhere - if its not where you are, move"
