Well, I am personally heading either to Dunnville on Saturday, or up to the cottage for the weekend. Either way, I will be walleye fishing for the most part. I think this thread will be beneficial to all who are virgin walleye fisherpeople! So if you have any tips for spring walleye, please share!

Shallower than you might think, especially if cover is present. even as shallow as 2 or 3 feet Current areas, mud/sand flats.

Mayflie representations (i.e. fuzzee grubs), minnow baits, weedless jig head tipped with 3-4" minnow.

Hey Try to find current with little pockets on the size. Walleye this time of season give very short strikes so if your jigging with a minnow make sure to use a stinger. also try a lindy rig.Look for sandbars, and river beds. Most of your fish will be caught on the stinger

Look for healthy weeds most of your success will come from finding a good green weed growth especially this time of the year try to find the weeds around the mouth of a river or creek fish a minnow style lure siver black rapala or use a fuzzy ripping jig minnow color to trigger a strike do this if a warm front comes in (at dusk). Depth to fish 3-7 feet in the weeds if nothing go a little deeper 8-10 feet the fish should not be deeper than that.

Now if a cold front comes in than you must slow it down. The strikes will be short as already mentioned.

If this is not working then go to the shoals and troll around slowly ... very slow that might produce some strkes again use a minnow style lure . Depth 3-14 feet

We were trolling bottom bouncers in 15 to 17 FOW with nothing but perch. Stopped on a 5 foot weed edge and Bang! Fish On.Goes to show ya you cant be shy going for those shallow weedy walleye.I will start fishing them deeper when the water warms up.We were getting them on Lindy Techni-Glow jig-heads and Bungy leaches(yellow and chartruse).Fish shallow to deep ,and always have a feel for your line, walleye when inactive will pick at your minnow or bait.A stinger hook attached to your jig head will increase the percentage of anglers hook-ups up to 50%,

If you are going to troll em out Rich I highly recomend the Manns Strech 20+ or a reef runner Little Ripper in a chrome/blue, or clown colour, when trolled at 2mph these baits can get down to 14feet maybe deeper and stay in the strike zone.

Rich this is basicaly what I do to get my walleye in the boat and it works every time.

my fav. is backtrolling slowly along dropoffs with a bottom bouncer and a worm harness with a willow leaf blade, and for the color of the blade I usually go with a blade that has a design on it offering a good contrast to the rest of the blade. If blade is say just orange I always carry a black permanent marker to draw lines or eyes on the blade for contrast. last weekend the only color that was good for me was a light blue blade with dark orange wawy lines on it. remember 1oz of bottom bouncer for every10 ft of water to keep a 45 deg angle or better. to keep from dragging bottom and not bouncing off of it.

We were fishing 3 foot Baitfish Image worm harneses.The colour that seemed to do the trick was the orange and black blades with orange beads.

Another thing while bottom bouncing is you dont have to set the hook hard, just a little pop should hook the fish.
