Record Cat!!!

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Record Cat!!!

Post by Cancatchbass »

I decided to beat FF to his Cat hole this evening and was rewarded with this record pinhead catfish:

It put up an awesome battle and thanks to FF was released safely after a few quick photos.

How many points for a 41" cat?

Caught my fair share of eels, how did it stop squirming long enough for the picture?

You want to play those things out...no more uncomfortable feeling then an eel wrapping itself around your arm like a snake. And their slime is like glue.
...anything to bend the rod

FF has a secret trick that calmed that eel down within seconds. We were able to take several pics and it didn't move a muscle!

I'll let him explain it to you.

As for the battle, it took what seemed like close to five minutes to get it in. The thing thumped constantly and held to bottom. We were sure I had a 15 pound cat on- at least I was.

And scuro- this eel was not slimy at all- probably due to the area it was caught in- clear fast-moving water over a muck/sand/stone bottom.

So- if I can't enter the fish as a pinhead cat, how about a stubnose gar?

Interesting an eel you say.I thought it was a softspined sturgeon/ I heard that they can grow to well over 414lbs andf are found mainly around the 1000 islands/brockvile kingston area of the St.lawrence river.

I googled it on the internet and this is what I found:

"The Softspined sturgeon is often mistaken for a snubnosed gar or the the elusive pinhead catfish. While all threeare similar in shape and share the same markings the snubnose gar only grows to 35" in length and will not weigh more than 5 lbs. The pinhead catfish whioch can grow to a length of 50" and weigh up to 15 lbs do not do well out of water. Most pinheads die almost immediately whne removed from the waters that they inhabit.

The softspine sturgeon - known for its eel like body has no spine. It is a voracious scavanger and has been known to grow to huge proportions.

The current world and Canadian record for a softspined sturgeon is 415lbs taken iin 1923 from the 1000 islands area of the St. Lawrence river.

Soft spined sturgeons are known to live well over 100 years. Unlike other sturgeons thier eggs are not prized for caviar."
