Bushwhacking for Brookies. (pics) Report

Left the house for an afternoon of exploration. Couple weeks back I caught wind of someone catching brookies in Moosonee, actually, the guy was supposed to stop in for some flies but never did. Awhile after the fly guy passed I got a visit at the clinic from an old guy who told me of brookies in two of Moosonee's creeks. He told me I'd have to walk a ways to get 'em, but that they were in the creeks waiting in the pools.

So I left Moose Factory, jumped in a boat taxi to the mainland, peddaled over to the clinic where I work to drop off my bike, then hiked the woods to find me some trout.

Leaving Moosonee, sneaking under the Polar Bear Express railroad bridge on Store Creek.

The pathway wasn't much at times and branched often. Fallen trees had to be hopped over now and again. It was the kind of trail you'd expect to have to hike to find brookies. But it was an awesome day at 16C, sunny and real comfortable. The cool kept the bugs at bay, that was real fortunate.

Image
It's definetely a scenic little creek.

Tried fishing several spots that looked promising, but I wasn't finding that quality swirling pool that I had envisioned would be the producer. I walked on until the trail seemed to completely end. I figured about 5 or 6 km back into the bush. Then, by accident really, I found a great looking spot.

I'd been running worms under a float on the way up with nothing but snags, so I threw on a Mepp #2 and spiced it up with a little nightcrawler.

Across and upstream in the shade was a nice little swirling eddy. Cast...... FISH ON! :D

Image
Little guy thrashes but comes to hand.

The fish got a photo, a thwack and then placed in the shade. When I was setting it down I heard the grass rustle a bit, and look what I found.

Image
TOOOOOAAAAAAAAAD :)

I had to chase the warty terd around a little for a good shot but I finally got a good one. Back to fishing I grabbed my rod, looked to cast downstream into the shade, and let one fly with all my might.

Engage, reel two, three, FISH ON!

So far, two, and I'm loving this.

Moments after photo ops, thwacks and cool placements I casted again, but this time I screwed up. I caught a dead tree branch upriver. I snapped off the branch with my 10lb Power Pro but ended up dragging it through the pool and it even escaped down river before actually breaking my line. That was it. After that it was over. No more fish cause swimming branches scares the bejeesus out of specks I guess. Ohh well, I still went home happy and I still went home with a new trout spot. :D

I love speckles.

Wow awesome report Bunk.

It reminds me of the north where I worked the railway.... to Armstrong, ON.

We had all these little creeks that ran along or under the railway and when they wouldn't let us work due to trian traffic...... we fished.

Monster brookies are a bunch of fun and sweet to eat.

Thanks for sharing.... it brought back some fond memories.

Hasbro or Mattel should manufacture and market an action figure called Mobile Moosebunk or something like that. You're a cool dude!

Great read & gorgeous pics, as always. That last brookie is beautiful, and has a little paunch to him. Nice payoff for your little excursionary trek.

I bet Seaweed back then you would pray every morning for trains, trains and more trains.

I do like trout to eat as well, but only a little. It has a definite taste of it's own that sometimes is just too.............. natural or pristine for this fried food junky. :?

Holy thanks wolfestress. :o

Now that action figure would be dressed like Kurt Cobain with a Tony Hawk twist. With the body of He-Man and the willy of Ron Jeremy. He'd carry a Fenwick ultralight saber rod in one hand, and a stringer of 4 gargantuan yellowfin tuna, 4 record sturgeon and 4 monster marlin in his other hand. His hair would be shiney and neatly spiked and not receeding in the least, and the eyes would melt the hearts of all his horny little groupie dock chicks and outboard strokers. With his neat set smile the gap between his teeth would have been fixed with a couple porcelain veneers, and just the glimering white would be all that's needed to bring the fish.

And lastly, instead of having to bushwhack for brookies he could just teleport himself to the hottest fishing action wherever, whenever.

:D

Somehow I think he spends more time with his Ron Jeremy in his hands that is Fenwick sabre. :P

WRONG MT. The Ron is in her mouth at streamside, I stand Fenwick sabre in one hand and stringer in the other. IT'S JUST AS I SAID IT BUD!!!

BTW MT, fantastic recollection of the Charleston Trip. Very good of you to let us see how the kids got to live it up. Man, between you, RJ and Markus so far, I wish I had of had the opportunity for that one. It's unfortunate these gatherings couldn't have all been planned and dated sometime last January because that's when I have to put in for my years worth of vacation dates.

Ohhh well, one of these days one gathering will fall while I'm in the valley, and if not, I'll be home soon enough.

Did you catch any fish yourself though???
