I heard it was tough getting a job afterward as a warden, but best of luck if you get it

I went to SSFC 'bout 10 years ago to take that course, fortunately for me I switched programs 'cause even the instructors were telling interested students that job prospects were quite slim in Ontario at that time (those of us who had aspirations of becoming COs anyway). However, that was 10 years ago and maybe there is new hope out there so please don't let me sway your decision.

On the bright side if you take the course in Lindsay (near Peterborough) you're near some great bodies of water to fish and it's a great party town to boot

Hey New Kid,

I graduated from SSFC in lindsay in 2000, my girlfriend graduated this april. We both took the Environmental technician program. It would be tough finding a job as a conservation officer right out of college. they are starting to encourage students to get both the college (for practical knowledge) and university degrees in the environmental studies. I can't say enough good things about SSFC. The entire school ecperience there was awesome. The faculty are more than happy to help you and the school in lindsay is small enough (about 2500 enrolled i think) that you get to know a large percentage of the students during your schooling. I'm going to sound like an add for the place but where i work there is a large number of management personel that have passed through SSFC in lindsay and that tends to hold true in other industries. The school has a reputation for turning out good grads. Also, i would recommend taking a 3 year program in you decide to go. the extra year is a lot more focused on applying all you've learned in real world situations.
The first semester is a "common" semester in which everyone takes the a litte bit of each program and at the end of that semester you can pick which field you want to enter. it gives you a chance to figure out which direction best suits your interests. I thought i was going to take fish and wildlife all along and ended up in environmental tech.

Anyway, sorry if i sounded like an advertisement. My girlfriend would say the same thing about that school. I live in the area now. thats how much i loved it up here when i went to school. if you decide to go up here, PM me and i'll tell you all my secret shore spots from when i went and maybe take you out for a fish in my little boat.

take care

If your heart is really into working in the outdoors, take the Common Semester program at SSFC in Lindsay and decide from there, this is the original and reputable school of natural resources  If your still set on a career as a Conservation Officer, take Natural Resources Law Enforcement Technology. Then go to a university and take Environmental Compliance law or a BS in a similiar field. While in college, volunteer as a DCO and rack up some field experience, even an auxillary Officer with the O.P.P. will help. The majority of competitions are in house (closed to the public). Due to the cutbacks in the MNR and a lot of early retirements, several positions (Way up North) have been open to the public for competition. The interviews are tuff as there are a lot of qualified individuals wanting the position. Good luck
