Yesterday at 2pm, my cousin caught a Canadian record rainbow trout in
McGregor Bay on Manitoulin Island. Its official weight is 40.68 lbs and
measures 39" in length. It also measures 12" from the fin to the belly.
She caught it using a medium action rod with 6lb test line. It ripped
through the bottom of the net once they got it over the side of the boat.
The previous Canadian record was 35.12 lbs set in B.C. in 1976. The
previous Ontario record was 29lbs. I've attached photos for your viewing
pleasure. This IS NOT an internet joke.
This is the first I heard of this. Congrats if it's true, but I'll be suprised if it is. That is one honk'n weight to top and to do it on 6lb line! I think I'll wait for the official annoucenent.
Let me guess...it was also caught by a 9 year old while he was jigging up perch.
I had a guest forget a bow in my livewell once...when I opened it up, it looked just like that.
Like Mark said....ture or not .....that is one hell of a fish...I got to get me a rainbow ...I would settle for one from the dorsel fin to the tail fin of that monster
That monster must have had to eat A LOT to get to that place on the scale. What a porker!
It would be kind of nice to have a new record; '76 was a long time ago. And it would be good to know in these days of gloom & doom claims that a record can be had.
Hope it's true!
W.
Thanks, Dad, for taking me fishing when I was a kid.
Steelhead fishing in the GL system is an introduced species and rainbow populations are increasing steadily year over year. Largely do to the Americans stocking efforts and better management of spawning tribs.
