Great Salmon run.

Hey all,
Good to be back after a few weeks not being on the site. Well, here is another great fishing experience, which some people experience every year for years and years. This was my first. It's been a great year for "firsts", but still haven't caught my first walleye.
So, bowboy33 and I left at about 330pm monday, much to my wife's
.
After the rain and cold weather we got it seemed like the good time for a salmon run. My friend has explained to me the thrill of the salmon fight. After a few fights in a row, you get pretty tired, but you don't really appreciate it until you live the experience yourself. Well, I was about to (I was hoping at least). I'm known for posting long posts, so I'll try to keep this one short.
As soon as we get there, we go a check the river for levels and speeds. Looks great, let's get the rods out. We get ready, my friend shows me how to rig up for salmon, and then how to cast and work the rod for bottom bouncing. On his second cast, on my line, showing me how to do it, BAM, hit, most people there would fight the salmon and land it and call it their catch. Well, he's caught hundreds of salmon. So he gives me the rod and says, "here, you fight it". First hit, first fight, first landed.
First salmon

Even writting this today, I'm still beside myself on how intense the fight was, and the power.
Here are some pictures of bowboy33's first two catches of the day.

I get into my second salmon, already exceeding my expectation, and we've just started.

You can kinda see that I'm not used to holding big fish. bowboy33's next catche.
You can tell he's used to catching big ones

I got the next one

All my catches so far have been 37, 37 1/2 and 38 inches. This next one, I believe ties the record for longest salmon on fishhawk.
A woping 40 inches, I wish I had a scale to weight it, it was fat.

Gee, can you tell by the smile on my face that I'm enjoying this.

Another nice catch, but not as big.

So we fish for a little while longer and catch a few more, but I have lots of pics already, so we just enjoy the night, the fish and the fact that there is no one around us.
I found it so impressive seeing the salmon just little falls, swimming against the current.
Here's a cool pic, you can kinda see the splash of a salmon who has just made the jump. This is early the next morning.

A little frustrating morning, we fished a different spot, bowboy's gotten into a few, and I've lost a few on bad hook sets.
my first one of the day, a little skinny.

These next two pictures I had to take and post them. It blew me away to see all....well, check for yourself. We didn't fish it this spot though, it's not really fishing when it's like this. They're all waiting in line to make the jump.

Some salmon enjoying a little surf's up in the sun.

We didn't take a whole lot of pictures on the second day, this was a worthy one. Bowboy33's nice catch.

I really got the feel of the fight on the second day, I could actually see them run and gun. And lost a few huge ones. I was at their mercy. Boom hit, line keeps going, and going, I set the drag, keeps going, slow the real down a little, keeps going. breaks my hook in half. I think on 3 or 4 occasions, this happened to me. How can you catch these guys when they're that powerfull. There was nothing I could do. I guess stronger hooks would be smart.
Anyways, we left at about 5 pm tuesday, this is a picture of where the salmon come in from lake ontario. Guess where I'll be, this time next year???...
YEP!!
Hope you enjoyed it.
