Why are there so few black anglers?

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Why are there so few black anglers?

Post by Markus »

I'm just curious. I see all types of people fishing, but in all my time out fishing, I've only ever seen 1 black angler....ever.

Do we have any black anglers that participate on FH.Net?

I find this odd and have been wondering why.

Whew! I was worried I'd open this and find a punchline.

Interesting question. One might also relate it to numbers in hockey.

I have a very good friend - probably the best big-bass angler I know - who is black.

A semi-retired school teacher, he is incredibly methodical when it comes to fishing and this trait helps when searching for true trophies.

In the spring/summer there are many black U.S. anglers who fish in this area (1000 Islands), most from New York and Pennsylvania, although several that I crappie fish with come from Michigan.

not sure why....

its funny, one of my good buddies, who i invited to join me on a trip, had no interest....

he said he doens't like the water. :D

I said there's an open invitation....

On the other hand, my middle eastern friends ask me about my weekend fishing trips every monday! They Love It!!!!

Maybe fishing is in our genes, past from our forefathers....?

I know a few black anglers...

I remember seeing a lot of black anglers when I used to fish Rice Lake with my grandfather.

Sleded has a good friend who fishes and is black.

But at the same time I have also noticed that there aren't as many black people fishing. I never really could understand why either.

The question should be:

Why are there so many ugly red-necked white guy anglers?

Actually, swing down closer to LSC, many Afroamerican folks out enjoying the water just like we do.

There are probably a few reasons why this is true for you. I think it is safe to assume that the locations you are fishing are mainly fished by white people because there are more of them with transportation, that live closer to those locations. If I remember correctly, you also have a boat so the places you would fish would probably be places where other people with boats would fish. I think you can also safely assume that on average, white people own more boats in Canada.

Now if you went to Africa and fished, I don't think you would be asking that question.

Back in 1968 on the May 24 weekend my Dad took us all to Pike bay for the perch fishing, we rented a cottage and were fishing from their docks. The bite was slow, don't remember catching any til Sat. night. After dark there were lanterns down on the dock and my Dad took us down to try again. One of the guys was doing real well, set us up properly and showed us how to jig! Caught lots of perch that night and I'll never forget it, the fisherman who helped us out was a coloured guy and now that you mention it, never have seen a coloured guy fishing since. I was 11yrs old at the time so it's been 38 yrs !

Never seen a man of such a race fishing. Fergie Jenkins on TV, but that's about it. Plenty of other colors out there having a go.... hmmm.... very peculiar. :?:

White men can't jump, black men can't fish? Its an interesting Q for sure. Methinks Joco, might have a point, in their native lands its a dif. story. Perhaps its just the white/coloured ratio here in our relative area? I can say I've never seen a black fisherman though.
