The other night a friend, and I were fishing the Ottawa near Kanata. We caught a few small walleye, and a ling. Does anyone eat this strange looking fish?

Yup

I know lots of people on another forum that do... Mostly americans, so who knows... I don't want to post the link on here. PM if you're interested. I'm sure you'll get some good replies here though.

Welcome to the site Jaws. I myself haven't tried or even caught a ling. But there was a thread a little while back about ling and that they do infact taste great. I've yet to test the theory but I will try them one day, if I ever catch one. :D

How could anything that looks that ugly be that tasty? I caught one a few yrs. ago and didn't even want to touch it to get it off the hook. They look prehistoric to me. Of course, these comments assume that what I caught was actually a ling.

Bulldog--I can believe you. My grandparents spent every winter day during retirement in the ice. They would only use bacon or pork rind, didn't believe in "hurting" worms or minnows. "after all they are gods creatures" They kept and ate big Pike and when my grandfather would pull a ling out He would beat it to death because it was devil spawned.
This is something I will never forget.

Norm, they still do it today. Bait Shop Bay gets pretty littered with them.

Excellent eatting
The only freshwater member of the cod family.
Fillet & skin than deep fry. Also excellent seasoned (fish crisp ect.) than pan fried. Poached than dipped in drawn butter is known as poor mans lobster.

Try it you'll like it :D

Out of curiosity, I'm wondering... Most threads I've read about ling were all caught through the ice. Are they more active during this time?

Hmmmm cod!

But wait one second Woodsman. Anyone who was hanging around the cleaning shack at our last Quinte Adventure in October will tell you that it is sheephead, when properly prepared, is the poor man's lobster! At least, that is what Rigger and his friends were telling us.

Where's that Rigger fella to? I'll never forget Turkeyman giving Rigger and his cronies the gears for cleaning a sheephead.

I can still hear Turkeyman's crusty voice grating on Rigger's ears saying "WHAT ARE YA CRAZY? WHAT ARE YA GONNA EAT A SHEEPSKIN FOR?"

Over the next few minutes in the cleaning shack, Turkeyman could not have been clearer that he thought Rigger was insane.

No doubt Rigger felt the same way about Turkeyman.
