vexilar vs. humminbird

I have a older humminbird fishfinder that i've placed in a wooden box and coverted the unit to ice fish. The puck like transducer is mounted on a wood pole that i place in the hole.
I can see my lure when i turn up the sensitivity.
Am i wasting my time with this type of setup? Are Vexilars better?

Without a doubt flashers are better than an LCD fishfinder. They're realtime so you see any movement within the cone of your transducer including fish, baitfish, and most importantly your lure.
But an LCD is still better than nothing at all IMO. What model hummingbird are you using?

i have a wide eye. I bought a newer piranhaMax for my boat last spring. So i thought id use the wide eye for winter fishing. I find that the LCD is sometimes hard to see when its real cold out.

If one can afford it, get a flasher for winter, vex or Marcum, and a good lcd graph for summer.
Now I can't justify spending $400+ on each of 2 different finders.
I will personally be purchasing a x67c, and if I can swing it I'll buy the X68C allseason. These machines are made for both Ice and soft water, the 68 comes with the gps built in.
I do agree the vex and marcum are slightly better for winter fishing though.

Well I run a Marcum but I can't vote in your poll because then I would be lying .

When used correctly an LCD in winter is as good as a flasher. Actually
I prefer LCDs.

Flasher winter, LCD summer.
I have seen many LCD screens freeze up on cold days and they seem to have a time lag.
The flasher is instantaneous.
I agree with trapperdirk MarCum flashers are the way to go.

Yes Marcums are less money than vexes yet have more features that come standard with them than vexes have . Marcum has raised the bar in the flasher world but no matter what you use they are a great tool .

What I mean is a)correct model b)correct setting
Correct model should have as fast scroll as possible and preferably should have a fast track/flasher bar. Many Eage, Lawrance and Garmin models have pretty good response time and have fast track bars. Most older Hammingberds and their newer Pirhanha series are a bit on slower side. They still can be used, but remember the limitations.
Correct settings: 1)deactivate all "extas" such as fish-ID, fish-alarm, automatic depth, temperature/speed reading etc. - they all slow down the response time and don't work correctly in stationary mode anyway.
2) Set the fastest scroll rate. 3) Adjust the sensitivity just to see your lure on required depth. If it is really cold - turn on the light. Many units have them and it helps to keep it just warm enough. I never had
the screen frozen on any of my LCDs even at -28C.
No question that the modern colour flashers are great toys. They just
enormously overpriced, and that's the only problem with them.

I agree on the high price of a flasher. Great tips on set up. I will do just that next time out.
