It's nice to see some smaller sturgeon like that around. I know there is a study going on regarding sturgeon populations in our area(Pembroke/Deep River) It is being done by a University(can't remember which one) and Ontario Hydro. There is talk the population is in trouble and they can't seem to figure out why. It sure is nice to see a small one like that though. If you look real close it looks like that fish is growing a Goatee????????

Thats kind of weird.

Ian, I think there might be 3 different species that one can find in the St.Larry's and tribs like the Ottawa. I remember reading that there are definetely lake and atlantic sturgeon. Lake being the more common. There might be one other.
200lbs and up to 6-7 feet for lake sturgeon, but average would be 3-5 feet. 168lbs is Ontario record Lake Sturgeon caught by rod and reel.
St' Larrys and lower Ottawa is considered a range for atlantics which can get up to 15 feet and 800lbs. A fish like that a definite rarity.

Too bad a great series of pics like that are going to have to be pulled down from view....(OOS Pic)
All because of a few OOS bass shots and a handful of blow hards........
Crawler, congrats on your first sturgeon....I'd like to think I'll got one too one day!

This winter I have pulled one through the hole about that size and had one big one at the hole but I was by myself and couldn't land it alone. I love the pics, they are a cool looking fish.
