petrie hard water today

well I hit petrie today for the first time this year . I was quite surprised to see the ice as thin as it was (12" - 14") . looks like the ice almost claimed one shack .I drilled a couple of holes to check for depth . I'm used to ice fishing in more than 3'-4' of water , but it seemed that was the preferance as most shacks were in that depth . Can any body tell me if that's the norm?Sure was a beauty of a day though . Lost 2 minnows , so the action was fierce
... oh well , I guess I have to hone my shallow water skills. I gather that mid day is not peak time .
I wanted to stay but my wife (the warden) had other plans
Oh well it was a good outing for me and the pup.
