Jig head: The store is not a Bass Pro Shop, they just order from BPS as many stores in the area do. In fact, they are not even supposed to use the BPS logo and will be in a heap of trouble if they are.

That is a HUMUNGOID no no.

When I first heard of this store, I called my contacts at BPS and they said new stores were planned for Canada in the future in Edmonton and Vancouver (2 bass destinations  ) but none in Luskville. These guys had an account with BPS, the same as I , but were in no way a BPS store or affiliate.

Slightly confused here, Ed. If your store will order BPS stuff for me, as well as this new one in Luskville, how is a shopper to know that if no signage is used? Secret handshake when entering the front door? I would think they would need some sort of a sign or emblem, in order to notify the customer that orders can be made.
One other thing - on Highway 7 almost in Peterborough, there is a marina/tackle shop that sports a huge BPS sign on the front of the building, and on a massive sign on a pole. Now, the actually sell BPS products inside, yet they are not a BPS store persay. Are you saying what they are doing is illegal?
Just curious...

Justin: I got a lengthy letter from the legal dept at BPS a couple of months ago (I assume all stores that use their wholesale division got the same) stating the do's and don'ts of signage. The only BPS logos we are allowed to use is what is on their packaging. We are not allowed to call ourselves associate stores (something I used to do), post any signs bearing the BPS logo or claim to be associated in any way with them.

I assume they do this so as not to lessen the impact of an actual Bass Pro store and perhaps insulate themselves from someone that is using their services but doing a poor job.

Now, having said all that, I am sure these guys in Luskville are just unaware of the rules, and are not trying to do anything wrong.

As to how do we promote the fact that we can get BPS items? In my store, I carry a few lines of their branded product and display it in an area where it is very visible.

Justin, ya got me thinkin', so I called American Rod and Gun (BPS wholesale division) today to get a clarification. This is what I learned.

We are allowed to use a small BPS sign on the outside and inside of the store, as long as it is used in conjunction with other brands, ie. Rapala etc, and as long as the BPS sign is no larger than the other brands displayed. The BPS logo also must contain the words "we proudly carry BPS branded products" around the perimeter.

The sign you mentioned from the Peterborough area is in fact the one being used in Luskville, and is outside of the Bass Pro requirements

I would like to make VERY clear that I bear these guys in Luskville no ill will, and in fact hope their business prospers, and also feel that they were displaying their signage out of ignorance, not trying to be malicious.

Thanks Ed for being honest and open with our fellow sportspersons. It's wonderful to see such sincere dedication to our outdoor sports. Your store is a provider for those who need the best in equipment and products. Your keen interest in fishing and outdoor interests has kindled respect for fishing and outdoor activities.
The new store in Luskville is an excellent place to meet those who contribute to the wonderful pleasure we receive from the outdoor sports we admire. The owners and staff have a vibrant desire to provide the dedicated sports person any item or special product they can to make that day eventful.
Our fishing, hunting, archery, marine and outdoor activities are well served by energetic, avid Independent Retailers like yourself and others.
The signage described was located on Highway 7, just north of Peterborough, but now is in Luskville, promoting all the fine products of that Independent Sporting Goods Retailer and including the Bass Pro Shops product lines.

Again
Thanks Ed for your input and dedication
