Please forgive me posting in the fishing forum but I wanted to make sure this question was seen.
My father in law's 1989 F150 pick up has this problem...
the fuel pump will stay engaged even after the ignition is turned off and then the motor will not re-start.
this isn't much info but if someone can get us started with some trouble shooting it would be appreciated.
Thanks for your time,
Keith

Keith hard to say without a schematic but could be the relay sticking, or possible ign switch prob

you could also try the Ford website for call backs. May be a problem that they will fix.

You need a fuel pump relay. They are available at your
Ford dealer for about $30.00.They do stick on, on
occasion and will cause the fuel pump to run all night
killing the battery in the process.
Sounds like a relay to me

Big Dawgs are always right it seems. Disconnect the ground find an electrical panel under the hood and it may be there or find a manual at a local auto parts store. Process of elimination will find the relay when it sticks but if it is the fuel pump it-self they are usually in the gas tank and that's more difficult to fix.

Tell your father in law to dig out the biggest heavyest rod and reel he can find and, also look into his tackle box and find the largest hook he can find. He must then impale the offending fuel pump with the said hook and cast as far as he can preferably towards the ford dealership
