Need some trout tips.

A buddy and I are heading out to try our luck at some brook or speckled trout on Saturday. We have already picked our location but I really have no idea what to look for as far as finding trout. We have picked a series of 3 small lakes lakes that are very close together.

Do I look for shallow or deep water? Flat bottom or a drop off? Weeds, sand, rock, mud? What would be the best baits?

Any help would be great.
