Haha, well here it is, the ultimate "one that got away" story! Tell it right here!

Mine would be a huge salmon, no idea on the size but it was massive fishing Hamilton Harbour in the fall from shore. Got it on a marshmallow and fought it for easily 25 minutes when finally it wrapped me around a bridge piling and that was the end of it. I still have nightmares about that fish!

How bout you? Interested to hear from the musky guys, Trophymuskie must have an experience to share!

Biggest fish lost

Mine would be a salmon as well. A few years back I was out to the left coast on business and my brother-in-law set up a charter in the Straits of Georgia in the Parksville-Qualicum beach area. Beauty day, 25 degrees not a cloud to be seen and a few adult libations. After about an hour we hooked into a salmon which they decided was mine. I fought the fish for about 45 minutes until we got him in close enough to see. We were looking at a Spring in the 35-40 lb range. The biggest I'd ever hooked into. The captain told me to move to the other side of the boat and keep the tension on. I obliged with shaking hands. He grabbed the net and leaned out to nab the fish when all of a sudden he let go with a burst of expletives  and the line started peeling off the reel.

A seal followed the fish in and just as the captain dipped the net the seal grabbed the fish and dove. We eventually got back the head so maybe it was a catch or at least a partial.

My brother-in-law, the philosopher said, "look at it from the fishes perspective, he was screwed either way".

We did have a salmon bbq on the beach that night but it was one we bought at the French Creek Marina.

Anyhow, that's my "the one that got away" story.

Probably not the biggest I've ever lost but one of the most memorable. A couple of years ago I hooked an 18 inch pike on a buck tail while fishing for musky. Within seconds of hooking the pike there was a large swirl and the line got a whole lot heavier. I fought the fish to the boat and there was my pike T-boned in the jaws of a musky that might have pushed the mid-50 inch mark. There wasn't a hook in the mouth of the musky but it refused to let go of the pike. I ran the fish across the side of the boat 4 times. I had forgot the net at home and I only had the cradle with me. Anyone who has a cradle knows how hard they are to use when you are by yourself. I decided to try to hand land the fish but when I put my hands on it...it FREAKED OUT!!! After it was over all I was left with was a pretty beat up dead pike and and a fishing tale that I will never forget!!

My ex and I both hooked into big pike in Constance Bay about 5 years ago within about 20 mins. of eachother. The problem we forgot the net in the garage. I tried to get my hands around the first one(mine, which was the bigger of the two of course) but it was to big and as soon as I tried to lift it, she thrashed, the pike, not my ex that came later, and off she went. The next one was a little smaller and the same problem no net and she got off. Clown and I fish there all the time and have never hooked up with pike that big again but we will keep trying. 8)

Great tales, everyone...

Muskysean...whew! That was exciting!

I don't have anything near as exciting, but let's just say I have a vendetta against an enormous bronzie in Wolfe Lake I've dubbed "Old Walter" (anyone seen on Golden Pond?)... He would have put the feather in my cap, had I landed him.

Love the thread, Rich.

Sadly a Musky on the Larry as a young lad. Haven't been able to boat 1 so it was my only shot! Had a floresent DD on and it was a beauty of a day in early July, was with my Dad before breakfast and it followed my lure in. I was soo excited, I got my lure back in as soon as I could and when the lure was about 4 feet from the boat he hit with a vengence and the water boiled and splashed! My heart skipped a beat as I set the hook, got him next to the boat(wasn't very far), then SPITOOIE! The DD went flyin and away he swam!

Well here goes.

I was living on the west coast for many a year. I went over to Cambell River for some ocean Salmon fishing with a couple of work buddies. We were on a charter boat, fishing for the King of Salmon the mighty Queen Charlotte Chinook. We were fishing for the majority of the day and caught one here and there, but nothing too spectacular. The 20 to 25 lb range. The guide switched flashers to some other colour that he had just bought that day. No sooner then the down rigger hit bottom did the line just start ripping off the reel. I got on the rod and started working it. The salmon came up on about 3 separate rises, took flight and we got a good look at it each time. The charter guys was flipping out...saying it would have easily been the biggest he had caught on his boat that summer. He said it had to be in the 50lb range. The tail on it alone must have been 8 inches accross. That fish was a yarry bugger...It would run the line straight out or down and then turn and start ripping back towards the boat. The skipper was screaming at me to reel in the slack as he would give the boat a good shot of gas at the same time. It would get under the boat and then go straight for bottom again. This went on for about a half hour, the fish repeating the same action, just not predictably. Finally I was getting him close to the boat and it took another hard run peeling line off like it was on a dental floss roll. Then sure enough he turned and started coming back on us again and the skipper was busy trying to direct the boat away from some rocks ahead. He didnt see and I didnt respond fast enough to the fish turning back on the line. Basically he wasnt on the gas and I wasnt reeling fast enough and sure enough, soon as there was enough slack in the line, it turned back on itself and ran the slack out hard, busting the hook out of its mouth. What bummer! What was really funny is that the whole mood of the boat took a total nose dive following this incident. It sucked! Funny though cuz I still have the pics of the deep sea rod I was using, bent over like a sapling twig!

I biggest one for me was a muskie that torpedoed the boat. What I mean, the muskie was comming towarwds the boat then all of a sudden it dove down and under the boat. I know now what to do if that happens but at the time I was too in shock at the size of the fish. It must have been in the 50's. I'm still kicking myself for not free spooling and bringing it to the front of the boat. Live and let learn, thats how I got the latest 47 (free spool let off the drag and thumbing it). That fish was huge, the compre and the powerpro held out well, it was the user that needed a little more knowledge. Lesson learned .
