Was out on the Madawaska lake the other evening after some small mouths in one of the coves and this huge fish started rolling around in the water abour 20 yards out from the bow of the boat. My fishing bud and I quickly figured out that Mr. Muskie had made an appearance. We had no gear big enough to attemp even teasing this brute so we stuck to our business and he stuck to his. That has changed now and this eve I am going to go back to this spot with my dad (the hound) and heavier gear to see if I can coax one out! Being from NS I have fished for shark but never fished for these guys and judging by your posts they sound like a challenge and certainly are a worthy opponent!
I am going to use a big bucktail jig with a black tail and troll, are there any trolling techniques I should consider?

If you have the spot then just cast like a madman. Vary the retrieve and be sure to add some action to the retreive if you notice it following.

Trolling is more a search technique for muskie. But it also catches fish.

....there's no muskie in the headpond...........ya probably saw a big ol' carp!

I was one of those suckers (no pun intended) who casted for carp thinking they were HUGE bass. Can't tell you how much time we wasted one afternoon on our local puddle before learning they were carp. Oops!

Your big bucktail could certainly get you a very impressive pike, which would still be a kick.

Thanks for the tips folks!!! I think you might be right on the Carp front! I did troll that head pond area but no luck. I was able to get my dad out both last Friday and Saturday so that was fun, on Friday evening we did meet a couple of folks up from Jersey who were Muskie fishing and had caught 3!!!!! They explained how to troll the structure in the lake for them so hopefully this weekend I will try it out.
On another front The Hound and I hit the Madawaska Saturday morning and I landed a 19 inch Smallie in the am (on the far shore across from the launch at the dam) and later I got a massive largemouth up past the power lines. I regret to say though that shortly after landing the smallmouth it expired. I was using a gulp 7" turtle back worm(pumpkin seed color). I will update you if I am lucky enough to meet Mr. Muskie this weekend!! Thanks again for the tips!

if and when you do decide to fish for Mr. Muskie, I would suggest three baits to bring along. A bucktail, a jerkbait and a crankbait
My preferred choices would be a black tail with a brass blade, very fond of "sledge" jerkbaits(weighted) and a depthraider for the crankbait.With these three options for casting you can cover from the top to about ten feet down.Trolling the crankbait could be up to twenty-five.

and yes they do fight well, not like a shark though
