First softwater outing on Lake O

:D :D

What an awsome day to be on the water, :D ......what a crappy day to be on the water, ....fishing......

I was up before the rooster this morning, ....in fact the rooster was still dreamin' about that chick, ....in the third pen down on the right, ....the one with the fluffy tail.....

We were set for a 7AM launch, .....just light enough to see all the logs, branches, debris, .....and pee pee off mud puppies that were floating down the creek..... 8)

Squigy would be at the ramp, ....Old guy on the other hand was a little unsure of his bearings, ....so I was to meet him at the Bronte rd. timmies....

The traffic was brutal, ....(be glad when it's light at 5 again, ....and avoid all that), ....I escaped on Burloak at the last second, ....or I might still be sitting there...., :?

After doubling back to pick up Trev, ....we were ready to roll, ....float, ....whatever...

Image

We motored out to a glass lake and peeking sun, ....the day had been made already, .....luckily 8)

The only thing disconcerting to me, ....was the balmy 33 deg water temp, .....I was hoping it had warmed up just a tad more than that..... :?

A gut feeling told me to head west, .....stupid gut, .....but hindsight is always 20/20, ...especially with guts....

Old Guy took the wheel and we started setting up just past the pier, ...in forty ft....We threw everything we had at 'em, ....two spoons on the riggers, ....tied a new fly on a spin doc for one dipsey, ....(they look awsome in the water by the way....), and crank baits on the other dipsey, flatline and inline, ......it looked good on paper, .....which is what the sonar was telling us, ....blank paper, ....nothin', .....no hooks, ...no bait, ......not even much interference.....

We sat and pondered our next move....

Image

Image

And decided to go deeper..... :D

Everything was cool, ...till we ran into this.....all hell broke loose on everything but the riggers, ....a quadrupple header, ...on ice cubes.....

Image

It wasn't a big patch, ....we figured it must have come out of the harbour, ....so after straightening everything out again, ....we pondered some more.......

I suggested hauling in a rigger, putting the sub troll down, ...and keep heading out......

Me and my big mouth......

However, ...out around 150 ft or so, ......it looked like things might be looking up, .......

Image

A lot better temps down there, ....but still reading a more or less blank screen, ....plus our spread had effectively been reduced to two rods.....

We pondered some more while we headed out past 200 ft.....

Image

Image

....Notice the difference in the demeanor......Oh Oh....

The final consensus was to pull lines, ...."skoot" back in shallow, ....forget the stupid salmon idea, ....and troll the shoreline for browns...... :D

This proved to be about as effective as our original plan, ....and the one after that, ...and after that, ...and so on....

Image

Image

I'd run out of plans by now, ....and it was getting to be 4 oclock, ......the final water temp when we decided to leave was a whole 34 degrees, ....c'est le vie..... :P

I'd still have to consider my first soft water trip a success, ....It was a gorgeous day to be out on the lake, .....the boat ran like a top, ....had six lines out for nearly eight hours with nary a tangle, .....and a couple of great guys for crew, .....swappin' stories about my old stompin' grounds with Trev, ......keeping "Squig" on his toes all day, .....

Awsome time guys, ....and thanks, ....I really needed that......

:D Good try out there. We are almost there Skooter. Last year April 10th we were picking up a few and by April 18th Bronte was hot. Soon you will be boating more of these.

A softwater report....a report with a boat in it....! :D :!:

Would have been perfect, if only for a couple of fish mentioned, but that's OK. It was still a fun report, Skoot, just as it was still a fun outing for you guys.

Glad to hear the boat ran well, too.

Betcha the next go round you'll have some fins and scales in the photo's.

Ha it must be Spring Skooters out of hibernation.
Good job getting out, its not always about the catching.

As Wolf said "A soft water post with a boat in it"

Thanks for the report Skooter - it was like a tonic for my winter tired body. Now I'm getting even more restless to get my rig out of storage. Living in Ottawa this time of year is very tough on someone originally from southwestern Ontario - I used to frequently hit the water early March, and like you said, catching would have been nice, but just being out is heaven. Good luck the rest of the year.

Great report. I always love the shots of the rods all set with the skyline in the background.

Thanks
