Hey All,

A group of us usually go canoe camping during Canada Day weekend at a lake 2 hours north of Ottawa on the Quebec side. This year two people due to medical reasons will not be able to do the 45min paddle to our regular campsite, so I volunteered to bring my boat and ferry some people and gear to the camping spot....Now here comes the question, there is no public boat launch at the lake we normally go to....so I was wondering if anyone here knows of a lake that has islands on it and are allowed to camp on them for free, the lake also has to have a public boat launch, it would also be nice if it was a good lake for fishing. We are looking for a lake perferably on the Ontario side within in an hour or two of Ottawa.

Any suggestions would be great

I have never used any of the islands on this lake, but call the Opengo Mountain Resort on Lake Clear (www.omresort.ca). The lake is fantastic for small mouth and walleyes. The islands on the lake are controlled by the MNR, but you can register at the campground. I think that you can not reserve the sites on the islands... but it's still worth checking out.

Lake Clear is near Eganville, takes me 1 hour and 45 minutes from Carleton Place towing a trailer (so going slower than normal).

Look into Charleston Lake, it is a very beautiful and very big lake. It is about 1.5 hours southwest of Ottawa, has great fishing , has a great Provincial Park with a good boat ramp and lots of island and remote mainland campsites. On the downside you will probably have to pay for the campsite and there are no walleye in the lake so the only other season open is pike although it is a very good pike lake.

What about Bass? any bass in the lake they are also open are they not?

Murphy's Point is good as well, Bass fishing is tremendous around there! as well as Pike. Any questions give me a hollar!

White Lake has several islands, as does the ottawa river up near Petawawa.

Suddsy's advice is good -- Charleston Lake has ample camp sites and is gorgeous with a variety of fish species & decent fishing.

The only problem you may run into with Charleston Lake and any of the P.P. is that you are looking for the Canada Day long weekend. If you have not booked already you may be out of luck. Something else to look into, if they do have any sites available, is if there is an alcohol ban in effect. (the May long weekend there is a ban in most parks)

With that being said I will pm you a spot that meets all your needs, free launch, free parking, free camping (crown land), and within 2hrs of Ottawa in Ontario.

All I ask is that you give us a full report but do not give out the location if you do go!

I was also thinking of trying camping at OP resort Goudieb,is it that good for fishing for walleys really?

is the camping ground good there too?
what else to do there for fun?

Legend, the campground is to my liking, but i highly recommend it to everyone who will listen to me (and no, i'm not affiliated with them in any way). It's not on the overly large size, it's got all of the ameneties, even a full service restaurant (you can camp and not even need to bring food!). Great activities for kids too.

As for the Walleye action, I've only hit the lake once for that species, and it was trolling in the evening, but the action was great. in 2 hours, I think we had 8 eyes. they were on the small size, there is a slot size for Lake Clear (I don't have the regs with me right now so I can't specify it). I've seen 6 pounders come out of it, but I'm not an experienced walleye angler, so mine were only small (I'm having a humble moment).

There are other activities close by. ATV trails all over the place. the website for http://www.omresort.ca has a link to other types of activities in the area.

thank you,its on my short list this summer for a stop over..Im really hoping to get there, the lake has eyes,pike,bass and trout what else could ya ask for? and Im aware of the heavily enforced slot sizes
