Actually walleyeboss, Its' a "Longnose Gar", lepisosteus osseus. There are 4 different species found in North America, along with several sub-species. Let's not confuse the guy eh!

I don't have anything meaningful to add to this post, but I do have this picture I took Sunday (June 10) on the Ottawa river of a gar, saw a bunch, but I only took one picture, I was too busy try to catch one, all I could do is get it to snap at my spinner bait, but no-go.

I hate to screw up this thread by adding a tip...but here goes. I've caught them several ways but the easiest I've found is topwater baits. We used to catch them all the time in the Trent river with any small topwater bait that you might use for Smallies.ie Tiny Torpedo, Pop-R's small Jitterbugs etc. Just remember to keep your trebles needle sharp in order to hook them. You'll miss way more than you hook but you will get some.
P.S. Oh yeah... DON'T try to lip them like a Smallie. I finally learned my lesson after about the 4th time trying!!!
