Big Rideau Laker Report - 13 June

Left the house in Orleans at 5 AM to be on the water as early as possible. Launched at the Portland Conservation Area shortly after 7, and started dragging the ball NE of Big Trout Island around 7:30. Caught my first Laker of the year (and 3rd ever!) on a blue and white jointed Rapala just before 8:00 at 60 feet over a 90 foot bottom, and a little past 9:00 caught a second at 50 feet over 80-85 feet. First fish was around 2 lb, the second was 4# and gave me a nice fight before I was able to net him. As I headed back to the launch I dragged a spoon with a single-barbless hook just for fun and had a tremendous hit that broke me off. I was off the water by 10 AM and home by 12:30.

Not a bad way to spend a morning. I was by myself and am not very good at taking self "Action" photos, but I do have a picture of the fish I took at the boat launch. Here it is (I hope)

Hi Muskymatt. I must be doing something basically wrong, because I have tried enclosing the URL to the photo in the Image tags, and still not photo appears. If you have the time, I'd appreciate if you'd walk me thru it.

Hey Tronster!

Good to hear you're hittin' those lakers. I can't wait to see some pics. I've gotta make it down big rideau way one of these days.

Wonder how big the fish / break off was? Must have been a good one.

Nice lakers; sounds like you had fun.

Hi Tronster, & congradulations on your two trout. I also was on Big Rideau on the 13th ( first time in two years) so we may have passed each other.

However I & my two partners for the day were unsuccessfull. We didn't arrive until about 8.00 am and fished until 11.00 am with no luck. My Lowrance LMS 332 C started acting up and the sonar would not work proprly although GPS was working great. Ended up using my old Eagle black and white that I have attached to my Minn Kota and were marking a few fish at 40' levels but more right tight to bottom, but couldn't entice any strikes.

Nevertheless it was a great morning to be on the water - even the OPP thought so - I was stopped and checked for the first time ever on the water, but met all their requirements.

The Big Rideau has something funny going on with it , I think it's highly magnetic active and sonars don't work well in spots.

I have netted a laker over 16 lb but locals have told me they get MUCH bigger but you have to know how to fish them.
