Im sure some you got off to a bad start this year with a boat malfunction.

Please post your story.

My brand new trolling motor decided it dident want to move at about 9am on sat. Still waiting for the dealer to bring her back to life. My dealer was great in getting me setup with a loaner for the remander of the weekend.

We lost some fishing time. But im sure some you have an even better story to share.

1lastcast,

I have yet to get out for either bass OR tiger muskies. If you want miserable company, I have one kid with resolving pneumonia and the other just started on antibiotics to treat for pneumonia. :(

The trolling motor problem stinks. Hope you get back out there ASAP.

And then there's this poor guy, Seaweed...look what he had to endure catching instead of bass on the opener. Can you imagine his pain? Jeez...!

yah poor guy. We did end up putting some bass in the boat that day. But the trolling motor issue was a bumer for sure.

Dont get me wrong though. Id trade a day on the lake catching nothing but black flys. For a day doing... well just about anything else :D

Fuse Popping

My boat's latest little malfunction is that my fuses are popping on the electric motor. I am sure they are hooked up right so there must be a short somewhere under the fuselage of the boat. I guess I will have to pull new wires from the battery to the bow again and see if that helps.

Only a bassguy would feel a void after catching a fish like that.

Honestly I was beaming with gratitude and recognized that this was the fish of a lifetime probably so I savoured the moment to it's fullest. Just ask anyone who knows me because it is all I have been talking about for days.

I have decided to head off to the Nascar race in New Hampshire this weekend and give the river a rest.

I feel your pain guys.

My Dad was nice enough to leave me his new boat at the camp for me to use last week while I was there on vacation. It was very nice of him since he hasn't even used it yet.

Long story short....

1) Tried the electric trolling motor, battery dead, won't hold a charge for more than 30 minutes (yeah, its really dead)....
2) One of the two fish finders needs a new tranducer, so its dead.....
3) Half dozen casts with my new spinning reel and I hear the bearings crunching, OK, its dead (since returned for a new one)....

Now the wind picks on on Lake huron, we have 4-6 foot waves crashing up on the beach - no go for fishing that day.

Finally got out, no bass, and I kept gettings hooked in these things, here is a picture, what could it be?????

Image

9lb laker, caught using riggers, 120 feet down in 250 FOW. Trolling as slow as possible, along a drop off that went from 80 down to 250 FOW. I ask the girl to get the net, but before I open my mouth I realize, we forgot the net at home! Damn, so I reach in, bare hands, grabbed it by the tail, and one hand under the belly and pull this lunker into the boat. Coming up from that depth it was pretty much dead anyways, sop it was an easy catch.

Got a few more in the small amount of time I got out when the wind died down. Smallest was 6.5 lb.

I lost a nice rainbow, must have been near the 10lb mark as well, my girl had to stop me from diving in after it once it came off the hook. It was almost within arms reach!

add this one to the list

Here's a good to one to add to the list of screw ups and so on!

Well after many emails I finaly went and brought in my 93 V-170-B Procraft to have the Rotary/dual anti feedback cable system replaced.

So far so good. The mechanic tells me that he replaced it with a Dual Rack N-Feedback System instead of the Rotary system, OK so I think its OK.

On Sunday I put my boat in the water for the first time and guess what?? turned left went right...turned right went left !!!!  By this time and $1,500.00 dollars later to have this done I wasn't a happy camper to say the least.  Brought it in this morning at the place where they did the work and the mechanic tells me "wow I've never seen that before!!! He continues and tell me "I didn't know they made different entry Rack systems". I looked at him and said "why don't you just switch the cables around where they connect to the rack Mechanic says NO can't do that I will have to replace the entire rack system.

Is this correct? First of all why would they replace a rotary cable system with Rack system and is that advisable.

Have you ever heard of this before??? Only in Canada apparently this happens...

Batteries and wiring/fuses

Seaweed: before you run new wiring, try this. Disconnect your wiring from the battery. Disconnect the wiring run from the motor as close as you can to the motor (probably in the bow). Measure the resistance across the 2 wires going directly to the motor. If this is a very low resistance, the problem is the motor, not your wiring run.
Does the motor have to be turned on to blow the fuse? OR does the fuse blow as soon as you connect to the battery? (with the motor turned off)
Off hand, what gauge and what length for your wiring at this time?

Crunchy: Most "maintenance-free" batteries have cell covers that may be removed. Do this and check the water levels in the battery. If one or more cells are low on water, they will not hold a charge and, basically, cause a high resistance. If you have to top up a cell or more, use only DISTILLED water. Worth a check before buying a new battery.

Anyone who wants to write about the bass on Simcoe (northeast part) boys and girls? Taking my kids up first week in August. Looking forward to Simcoe/Couch and maybe Canal and/or Dalrymple if we are blown off the big lake.
Thanks, Tim J.

It does have the removable cell covers, and I was going to check that, but I didn't have time, you know, the lakers were biting.

It belongs to my old man, and he is checking it out. The battery is the original from when the trolling motor was put on the boat, back in 2000. I would not be surprised if its done.

BTW - its an Energizer brand, deep cycle, are those any good?
