I will be leaving for Charleston Lake Saturday morning for two weeks of NO WORK and all fishing with my wife and two of my three daughters! We are a fishing family and enjoy our trips out together. We are staying on Hogback Island. Wolfe was very helpful in assisting me find a spot to stay, thank you. My questions are as follows....1) Has anyone fished it for bass lately, small or largemouth and if so can you point us in the right direction to a spot or two. I like to fish cranks and tubes alot for smallies! 2) I fish lake trout from time to time back here in NJ and do very well jigging them deep, is this a technique that is used with any success here? My wife and I were really happy to hear that cell phones don't work well on the island although our employers were not! We have opted to not bring them as they usually are no help when it comes to catching fish and relaxing. Hope to maybe see and meet some of you on the water. Thanks!
There should be some decent bass all around Hogsback. To the north end of the island and into the "Four Corners" you can find some largies.
As you head down the south end you'll tend to find smallies.
Off the bottom end of hogsback between it and green island there is a rockpile that you can't miss (actually you want to ....might hurt) that can hold fish at times. Theres 40 ft water all around it.
For Lakers , jigging works well, just need to find them and no wind (been tough lately). From Hogs back, your close to lots of trout water
Was There on the 28th. Got one laker on the south end at about 60 to 90 feet
Came back and fished west of the Athens marina. Got lots of small bass, but no big one.
The amount of structure for smallmouth is overwhelming. Avoid bald rock spots completely, if it isn't all broken up move on. Limestone is better than granite. Points and shoals that are flat or a moderate taper are better than sharp drops. Scattered clumps of weeds are good too.
There is a large flat a mile south of Hog Back the runs from Croziers (Rabbit) Island to Flat Island. It has all the above features. It's a community hole but the flat is huge, almost a mile long. The north side (rubble) is better than the south.
Smallmouth should be still be in less than 15 ft of water. Use a large topwater plug in the evening, something like a Zara Spook. It'll catch more big bass than anything and don't be afraid to fish it over deep water they'll come up for it.
